Backstage Pass was my erotic romance book selection for the February Romance Book Reading Challenge and boy was it smokin’!
Brian Sinclair is the lead guitarist for the rock band, Sinners. He meets Myrna Evans, a human sexuality psychologist and professor, when he’s not quite his best (drunk off his you know what) but that doesn’t stop Myrna from expressing her attraction for the rocker.
Their meeting kicks off a weekend affair that turns into a months-long affair when Myrna tags along for the rock band’s tour to study their groupies for her research.
I loved the reversal of “stereotypical roles” in this novel. Brian is the rock star who’s wanting the committed relationship while Myrna is the one who’s just living the fantasy of doing a rock star, enjoying the sex and is hesitant for any type of commitment given her past history.
I also liked that the book explored themes of sexuality, particularly how a woman’s interest and exploration can be called “wrong” or “whorish” compared to a man who engages in similar activities.
This book definitely fit the bill for erotic romance as Brian and Myra’s relationship really centers around their exploits.
It’s a bit abrupt and in your face in the very beginning with all the bedroom scenes which could turn some people off, but then the story does seem to pick up and you learn a bit more about them outside the bedroom.
Since this is the first book to the Sinners on Tour series, it does a great job of flushing out the full cast of characters in the band, setting up their personalities for future books. In doing so however Brian’s band mates were all over his girl even when they knew he was a one-woman guy.
He was also portrayed as a private, relationship guy but he shared quite a bit which just seemed out of character. The scenes however were pretty hot so I’ll let that discrepancy go!
I also liked the fact that Myrna became his muse (who wouldn’t want that!) but she was a bit all over the place and somewhat annoying at parts. She was wrestling with some important demons which I think could have been flushed out more too.
Overall, I enjoyed this book and will be checking out and catching up with the other band members of Sinners in the subsequent books of this series. If you like sexy rock stars and erotic romance then this book will be your jam.
