A new MM romance series by the amazing duo of Brooke Blaine and Ella Frank? – you betcha I’m all over it and The Elite series did not disappoint.
I was ready for a steamy, MM romance and that is exactly what is delivered in these three romance books.
Books Reminiscent of Top Gun
Let me first say that this entire series had such a strong Top Gun vibe running through it.
It wasn’t a complete retelling of the movie but the similarities are VERY strong and it’s obvious where the authors drew their inspiration.
I loved the iconic movie, so I loved the similarities.
It also made it easy to visualize Solo and Panther wearing their flight gear, flashing their aviators and flying high in the skies.
Alpha Males to Love
Solo was akin to a young Tom Cruise who had no qualms about pushing the rules or getting ballsy in the sky with his pranks like the “I’ll do it my way” Maverick.
He had the skills to back up his cockiness and the smirk to go along with it.
Panther was similar to the straight-laced Ice Man. He was the one to beat. But despite his by the book ways, he was oh so sexy when he finally let loose.
We first meet Mateo “Solo” Morgan and Grant “Panther” Hughes in Danger Zone.
They are both fighter pilots in an elite training program, both vying for that number one spot – to be named the best of the best.
Neither will accept defeat and yet neither can seem to ignore their attraction to one another even if a gay relationship isn’t standard in the military.
This book is probably the best of the series because it draws you into this fighter pilot world and you come to understand what makes each of these men tick.
This was an opposites attract love story from the start.
Solo is a man known for his reckless flying and doesn’t hide the fact that he’s a gay man in the military.
Panther is an elite pilot who has big expectations to meet following in the footsteps of his fighter pilot father. Raised in a military family with his path set before him like his father, he’s kept his attraction to men on the down low.
But despite his greatest attempts, he ultimately can’t fight his attraction to Mateo.
A Great Series
Each book follows the progression and development of the relationship between these two men.
To sum it up – in book one you get the initial attraction, attempts at denial and then the HOT moment when they finally give in. It ends on quite a cliffhanger. Book two is all about building connection and book three focuses on the tests to their relationship and what their future may hold.
I loved the push-pull chemistry between these two. Both could play the alpha role well and yet they both could also let their guard down and show a softer side.
There was just enough fighter pilot activity to move the story along and make it exciting though even that dropped off by the time you get to the third book.
So, if that aspect of the story doesn’t particularly interest you, don’t worry about it.
Brooke Blaine and Ella Frank sure know how to write sexy characters who can turn up the heat but there was just as much intimacy as there was intensity throughout the books.
The Elite is definitely a series you’re going to want to pick up and will fly through to the very end. Danger Zone (and the series) also made my list of best MM romance books.
