A Legend in the Baking Summary:
August Hodges was supposed to be the silent partner in Sugar Blitz Cupcakes. Emphasis on silent. That is until his impromptu feminist rant about how women bakers are the backbone of the industry and baking cupcakes isnโt a threat to masculinity goes viral, making him the hottest bachelor in town.
With a new location in the works, August and his partners decide to capitalize on this perfect opportunity to help cement their place in the community. But the hiring of his best friendโs younger sister, the woman who has haunted some of his best dreams for years, was as much of a shock as his new-found fame.
Social media manager Sloane Dell fell hard for her brotherโs best friend the moment she met him more than a decade ago, but that teenage infatuation cost her dearly. Still, she accepts her brotherโs request to revamp the bakeryโs social media presence to take advantage of Augustโs newfound popularity, knowing itโs the big break her fledgling career needs.
Sheโll just ignore the fact that August is still August, i.e. hotter and sweeter than any man has a right to be. And that he drives her crazy with his resistance to all her ideas.
They vow to leave the past in the past. But when an explosive make-out session makes it clear their attraction burns hotter than ever, Sloane and August are forced to reconsider what it means to take a risk and chase your dreams.
As theyโre both about to find out, allโs fair in love and cupcakes.
A Legend in the Baking: My Review
Beware that you are going to be hungry while reading this cute, brotherโs best friend romance. I kept wishing I had a cupcake to devour while reading this book about a quiet, adorable football player whoโs also part baker and jack of all trades.
Wesley continues her Fake It Til You Bake it series with this book that can absolutely be read as a standalone (I did not read the first book in the series and had no problem following this story). It follows August, one part of the trio of pro football players who have opened a cupcake chop and are about to open another in a new neighborhood.
What August thought would be an easy open turns out to be anything but given heโs just gone viral online after a rant against chauvinistic men, has to work with a woman from his past who spurs feelings and deal with a community that is not proving welcoming.
With all of those things on Augustโs shoulders, Wesley has a lot messages she conveys through this story, including how August doesnโt feel like heโs a man whoโs lovable. Understandable given that his father has never been a father to him or supported him in his ventures and his ex-wife wrote a book about how her marriage held her back.
It was really sweet to see August come into his own and finally voice his feelings and to get closure and feel confident in his love for Sloane.
Sloane was a fun heroine to root for especially since you first meet her while sheโs getting gaslighted by her employer and denied a promotion she rightly earned. She has her own struggles throughout the story including determining how far sheโd go to earn a job and trusting in her feelings when theyโve been hurt in the past.
These two were adorable together and Wesley does a great job of establishing their connection and chemistry by interspersing chapters of their relationship from the past with how they are dancing around each other in the present.
While I think there were a few unnecessary hardships thrown into the story (did she really need to get food poisoning when she did?) I enjoyed this story and liked seeing their happily ever after.
And can I just say that this is one of my favorite book covers of the year? I love everything about it: the colors, the characters, the adorable cupcake. Itโs perfection!
