Best Enemies to Lovers Romance Books Worth Reading
Thereโs a reason enemies to lovers romance books remain one of the most beloved tropes in romance. No other trope delivers tension quite like two people who can barely tolerate each other suddenly realizing the line between hate and obsession is dangerously thin.
Thereโs something uniquely satisfying about watching two people fight their feelings almost as fiercely as they fight each other. The banter gets sharper, the chemistry gets hotter, and every tiny crack in their armor feels impossible to resist.
The best enemies to lovers books thrive on emotional friction, simmering chemistry, and payoff that feels earned. But not every romance labeled enemies to lovers actually delivers that tension. These are the books that truly deserve your time.

โญStart Here: My Top Picks

Fourth Wing
by Rebecca Yarros
For readers who want addictive fantasy romance with dragons, life-threatening trials, and a slow burn pairing that completely consumes the page.

The Hating Game
by Sally Thorne
Still one of the gold standards for workplace tension, elite banter, and chemistry that somehow gets even better on reread.

Heated Rivalry
by Rachel Reid
If you love emotional intensity wrapped in years of competitive obsession and scorching chemistry, this one absolutely lives up to the hype.
Top Enemies to Lovers Romance Books

Fourth Wing
by Rebecca Yarros
Fantasy Romance, Dragon Riders, Slow Burn
I dare anyone to read Fourth Wing and not immediately understand why readers became completely obsessed with Violet and Xaden.
Their animosity is baked into the story long before the romance even begins. Violet enters the Riders Quadrant carrying the weight of her motherโs reputation while Xaden has every reason to distrust her because of it. Every interaction between them feels dangerous, loaded, and impossible to look away from.
What makes this romance so addictive is the restraint. Yarros lets the tension simmer while building emotional trust beneath all the hostility and suspicion. And when those walls finally crack? Absolute perfection.

The Hating Game
by Sally Thorne
Office Romance, Workplace Competition, Slow Burn
Thereโs a reason this book became such a defining romance for the trope.
Lucy and Joshuaโs office war is petty in the best possible way. Their constant need to outdo each other turns even the smallest interactions into battlefields and the tension between them becomes impossible to ignore.
But what really makes this book stand out is how gradually their perceptions begin to shift. Watching Lucy realize that maybe Joshuaโs attention toward her has never actually been hatred is what makes this romance so satisfying.
This is one of those books that reminds you how powerful chemistry and banter alone can be.

Heated Rivalry
by Rachel Reid
MM Romance, Hockey Romance, Secret Relationship
This book is ridiculously hot but what stayed with me most was the emotional intimacy hidden beneath all the rivalry and secrecy.
Shane and Ilya spend years competing against each other publicly while privately becoming the most important person in each otherโs lives. Their dynamic is sharp, competitive, and emotionally messy in the best way.
Ilya especially completely stole the show for me. Beneath all the arrogance and antagonism is someone aching to be loved openly and fully.
If you love sports romance with elite chemistry and emotional payoff, this one absolutely deserves the hype.

Quicksilver
by Callie Hart
Fantasy Romance, Morally Gray Hero, High Tension
Kingfisher is EVERYTHING.
This book absolutely thrives on dangerous chemistry and that intoxicating push-pull dynamic where you never fully know whether these characters want to kiss each other or destroy each other. The tension between Saeris and Kingfisher feels razor sharp from the very beginning and only intensifies as the story unfolds.
But what really makes this romantasy stand out is Kingfisher himself. Powerful, morally gray, emotionally guarded heroes are everywhere right now, but he actually feels distinct. Heโs ruthless and terrifying one moment and unexpectedly vulnerable the next which made me completely obsessed with every scene he was in.
If you love fantasy romance with obsession, tension, and a hero who completely takes over the book, this absolutely deserves the hype.

Twisted Hate
by Ana Huang
Best Friendโs Brother, High Steam, Frenemies
Josh and Jules weaponize their dislike of each other like professionals and honestly thatโs exactly what makes this book so fun.
Their banter is vicious, flirtatious, and constantly teetering on the edge of combusting into something else entirely. Once the tension finally snaps, the chemistry is absolutely explosive.
But underneath all the hostility is a romance that slowly reveals two people who understand each other far more deeply than either wants to admit.
This remains my favorite book in the Twisted series for a reason.

The Worst Guy
by Kate Canterbary
Medical Romance, Forced Proximity, Grumpy Sunshine
Mandatory conflict resolution counseling between two surgeons who genuinely cannot stand each other? Incredible setup.
Sebastian and Sara are sharp-edged, stubborn, and deeply flawed which makes their connection feel so much more real than romances where the conflict feels superficial. They push every one of each otherโs buttons while somehow also becoming exactly what the other person needs.
And the chemistry in this book is absolutely top tier.
The tension, the bickering, the emotional vulnerability hidden underneath all the antagonism – Kate nailed all of it.

Red, White & Royal Blue
by Casey McQuiston
MM Romance, Royal Romance, Political Romance
The tension between Alex and Prince Henry works so well because it begins with genuine misunderstanding and resentment before slowly evolving into something much deeper.
Their forced public friendship creates some of the best emotional progression in romance because neither of them expects the other person to truly understand them. Yet thatโs exactly what happens.
This book is funny, emotional, romantic, and surprisingly tender once the walls between them finally come down. Henry completely wrecked me emotionally and I regret nothing.

The Spanish Love Deception
by Elena Armas
Office Romance, Wedding Date, Slow Burn
This book is basically slow burn torture in the best possible way.
Catalina and Aaron spend so much time irritating each other that every tiny crack in their dynamic feels monumental. The tension is stretched almost painfully tight before Armas finally gives readers the payoff theyโve been desperate for.
Aaron Blackford is exactly the kind of hero this trope thrives on – emotionally reserved, quietly attentive, and secretly gone for her long before she realizes it.
If you love yearning, unresolved tension, and emotionally repressed heroes, this absolutely delivers.

Lost and Lassoed
by Lyla Sage
Small Town Romance, Found Family, Forced Proximity
Teddy and Gus have the kind of chemistry where even their arguments feel intimate.
Their history gives the tension real emotional weight and I loved how Sage slowly peeled back the reasons behind all their resentment and hurt. Beneath all the sarcasm are two people who genuinely see each other in ways nobody else really does.
But what elevated this book for me beyond just the romance was the incredible found family dynamic. The emotional warmth woven throughout this story made every relationship feel richer. And Gus calling her โTeddy babyโ? Yeah, I was done for.

Love, Theoretically
by Ali Hazelwood
STEM Romance, Academic Rivals, Emotional Growth
While some books feature professional or academic rivalry, the best enemies to lovers romances add genuine emotional friction and antagonism before the romance unfolds and Ali Hazelwood absolutely nails that balance here.
Elsie and Jack begin with distrust, assumptions, and academic baggage hanging over every interaction. But underneath all that tension is a romance that becomes deeply emotional as Elsie slowly learns to stop reshaping herself into what everyone else wants her to be.
Jack is exactly the kind of quietly attentive hero Hazelwood writes so well. He sees through Elsieโs defenses almost immediately and challenges her in ways nobody else does.
This is one of Hazelwoodโs strongest books in my opinion.

Brutal Vows
by J.T. Geissinger
Mafia Romance, Arranged Marriage, High Steam
Spider and Reyna had me hooked almost immediately because the chemistry between them is absolutely electric from the start.
What I loved most though was how emotionally open Spider actually was beneath the intimidation factor. He communicates, pushes Reyna to do the same, and slowly becomes this incredibly safe place for her despite the chaos surrounding them.
The banter, dirty talk, and emotional tension are all fantastic but itโs the emotional vulnerability that made this romance stand out for me.
I genuinely wanted to reread this immediately after finishing it.

Book Lovers
by Emily Henry
Rivals to Lovers, Small Town Romance, Publishing Industry
No one writes emotional intimacy quite like Emily Henry and Book Lovers absolutely proves it.
Nora and Charlieโs dynamic feels different from a lot of enemies to lovers romances because their tension comes less from outright hatred and more from emotional defensiveness, rivalry, and the way they instantly recognize themselves in each other.
Their banter is elite but itโs the quieter emotional moments that make this romance unforgettable. Henry writes longing and vulnerability so well and this book completely sneaks up on you emotionally. One of her strongest romances in my opinion.

The Cruel Prince
by Holly Black
YA Fantasy, Bully Romance, Court Intrigue
If you love enemies to lovers fantasy romance with manipulation, political games, and morally gray characters, this series absolutely deserves the hype.
Jude is truly the standout here. Watching her navigate the cruelty of the fae world while refusing to back down from Cardanโs torment made this impossible to put down.
The tension between Jude and Cardan thrives on power struggles, distrust, and emotional vulnerability hidden beneath layers of cruelty and pride. Itโs messy, dramatic, addictive, and one of the strongest YA fantasy romance dynamics out there.
