Elizabeth Starling has a lot riding on this year’s Sweetbriar Harvest Festival. Her family’s farm is struggling financially, and as the Starling in charge of the festival, she’s determined to make it a success while hiding just how much pressure she’s under behind her usual humor.
Officer Matt is used to staying on the outskirts, quietly taking care of everyone else without asking for much himself. But when his sister and Elizabeth’s meddling grandmother get involved and Matt finds himself participating in the festival’s five-event Mr. Pumpkin contest, Elizabeth and Matt start spending a lot more time together.
And it turns out these two are pretty good at recognizing what’s hiding underneath each other’s carefully constructed armor.
My Review of Pumpkin Spice & Promises
If you’re looking for a quintessential fall romance to sink into this season, Pumpkin Spice & Promises is definitely one to pick up.
This was my first Nora Everly book, and she completely immersed me in the small town of Sweetbriar and all things fall. The Sweetbriar Harvest Festival, the family farm, and five ridiculous contests involving grown men competing for the title of Mr. Pumpkin give this book so much seasonal charm. Just be prepared for plenty of descriptive writing because Everly really takes her time creating that atmosphere.
But underneath all those fall vibes is what made this a four-star read for me: a really sweet love story between two people who are always doing for others and finally find someone willing to look out for them.
Elizabeth is constantly running on empty but would do anything for her family and their farm. Humor is her armor, but Matt seems to recognize how much she’s actually carrying. At the same time, she sees that Matt has spent his life quietly hanging back, taking care of others while never really allowing himself to fully participate in his own life.
Matt was a man after my own heart. He’s quiet, professional, and genuinely good, but there’s a vulnerability underneath all that reserve that Elizabeth slowly draws out of him. I loved everything from his trips to her store where he’d pretend to buy something he didn’t need just to see her to the moments when he finally puts his heart and feelings on the line because he trusts her with them.
I also really appreciated that Everly didn’t make us wait until the final chapters for these two to acknowledge what was happening between them. By around the halfway point, they’re already admitting that feelings are developing, which means we actually get to watch them navigate those feelings and grow closer instead of spending the entire book waiting for them to finally get together.
There were moments when the descriptions became a little too detailed for me, but they also contribute to the cozy, unhurried feeling of the story. Even the eventual conflict worked because it grew naturally out of how much these two care about each other rather than feeling manufactured simply to separate them. And Matt’s grand gesture was a wonderful payoff.Pumpkin Spice & Promises gave me the fall atmosphere I wanted while also giving me a couple I genuinely cared about, and that’s what made this one stand out.

Final Thoughts
Pumpkin Spice & Promises was exactly the kind of sweet fall romance I wanted to find this season. The harvest festival and Mr. Pumpkin competition bring the autumn fun, but Elizabeth and Matt’s relationship is what kept me invested.
I especially loved watching Matt come out of the background and start allowing himself to want something for his own life, while Elizabeth finally had someone willing to recognize when she needed support too. Their romance is gentle and low on angst, but it never felt boring to me because I believed in why these two belonged together.
If you’re craving a small-town romance that goes all-in on fall atmosphere while still giving you a thoughtful love story at its center, I’d highly recommend this one. After my first Nora Everly book, I’ll definitely be checking out more from her.
