The Homemaker Summary:
Alice Yates is the hired โhomemakerโ for the Morrisons, an affluent couple in Minneapolis. For Alice, itโs a dream job to dress up like a 1950s housewife and read romance novels to Mr. Morrison before his afternoon nap.
But when the Morrisonsโ only daughter returns home for the summer with her fiancรฉ, Alice comes face- to-face with her shattered pastโthe only threat to her perfect life.
Eight years earlier, vacation rental owner Murphy Paddon had an impeccable vinyl record collection and did the most irresistible thing before kissing Alice, earning him a five-star rating. Their fortnight love affair was life-altering and ended tragically.
Murphy doesnโt know if Alice remembers him or whether he should tell his fiancรฉe that the hired-help living in the guesthouse is the woman who irreparably broke his heart. He needs closure, but will the lingering glances and silent yearning lead to the end or just the beginning?
The Homemaker: My Review
Jewel E. Ann seriously creates the most intriguing storylines, the most captivating characters and the most emotional romance books and boy does she do it again with The Homemaker.
I have SO MANY thoughts about this book (thank goodness she will be joining me to answer all of my questions on the She Reads Romance Books Podcast!). I started reading it and honestly could not put it down because I just had to see what was going to happen next and what feeling I was going to be overcome with next because I HAD SO MANY FEELINGS!
But firstโฆ.this book has one of the best opening lines ๐. Youโll just have to read it to discover what it isโฆand then I was just captivated.
My heart has never ached so much for a heroine. Alice is a broken woman when she rents a place to stay from Murphy, yet she pretends to be this carefree woman just โon breakโ from the world. And this break turns into a two-week love affair with him filled with afternoon delight every day โ lucky girl. Their tryst was sweet? hot? Both!
But eight years later they reconnect while Alice is hired as a โhomemakerโ for a wealthy married couple who have their daughter and her fiancรฉ (who happens to be Murphy) come live with them for the summer.
Oh man, this forced proximity set up! As I said I had so many feelings in this book about their reunion, Aliceโs job, the innuendo, the crazy situation of Murphy loving two women. Gah!
As for Aliceโs job, Jewel must have had so much fun with this part. I mean the woman dresses up like a 1950s housewife, reads romance novels to Mr. Morrison before his afternoon nap, pretends to make homemade soap and the man eats it up! I honesty didnโt know what to think about it. I was laughing like Alice one moment, rolling my eyes like Blair the next and vacillating between finding it humorous and bizarre.
Then there is the forbidden nature of Alice and Murphyโs reunion while Murphy is planning his wedding to Blair. Iโll just leave that sentence there to peek your interest in reading what transpires.
But there is so much more that unfolds about Alice, their relationship and the summer at the Morrisons. You should really just dive into this without knowing more than the summary and see what emotions it evokes in you.
Itโs so wonderful to find an author who writes such unique romances that makes you feel all the feels and question and swoon and cry all in one sitting. I adore Jewelโs writing and cannot wait to see what she writes next!
