What This Book Is About
Quincy Monroe has worked tirelessly to become one of the most respected young meteorologists. Between her PhD in atmospheric sciences and her successful weather Instagram channel, she’s finally on the verge of landing the career opportunity she’s been chasing.
The only problem? Her biggest professional rival is after the very same job.
Sebastian Dunnโher best friend’s brother and a charismatic TV weatherman from New Yorkโhas spent years competing with Quincy in both academia and meteorology. As hurricane season ramps up, the two repeatedly find themselves chasing the same storms, and what begins as another battle to prove who’s the better meteorologist slowly evolves into something neither of them expected.
My Review of In Stormy Weather
Apparently it’s the year of competing meteorologists in romance, and I’m completely here for it.
I actually started this book while vacationing in Florida on a rainy day, which turned out to be the perfect setting for a romance centered around storm chasing, hurricanes, and two meteorologists who spend their summers tracking Florida’s wild weather.
If you’re fascinated by weather, this is absolutely the book for you.
Chelsea Curto clearly knows her subject matter, and her passion for meteorology shines through every chapter. I learned far more about hurricanes, tornadoes, and Florida weather systems than I expected, making this one of the more immersive STEM romances I’ve read recently.
Quincy was easily my favorite part of the book. I’m always drawn to heroines carving out careers in male-dominated fields, and Chelsea does a great job showcasing both Quincy’s expertise and the challenges she faces earning respect in her profession. I especially loved seeing her passion come alive through her weather livestreams and the segments she filmed alongside Sebastian. Those moments felt authentic and were where Chelsea’s writing really stood out.
I also appreciated the conversations surrounding sexism in STEM careers. At times, though, those situations began to feel a bit repetitive, and I found myself wishing Quincy had been given more opportunities to advocate for herself instead of Sebastian stepping in on her behalf.
The romance itself was enjoyable, particularly Sebastian’s quiet “he falls first” energy, but I never felt it completely eclipsed the STEM aspects of the storyโwhich, depending on what you’re looking for, could be either a strength or a weakness.
My biggest challenge was simply the density of the weather discussions. While I appreciated the authenticity, there were sections where the technical explanations slowed the pacing enough that I found myself skimming. I also questioned some of the risks Quincy and Sebastian willingly took while chasing hurricanes, but I was happy to suspend disbelief and enjoy the ride.
I received an advance reader copy. All opinions are my own.
What I Loved
- A smart, capable STEM heroine passionate about meteorology
- The weather livestreams and on-air chemistry between Quincy and Sebastian
- Sebastian’s subtle “he falls first” energy
- A strong friend group that feels perfectly set up for future books
- An authentic look at women working in male-dominated STEM careers
Things to Know Before You Read
- Heavy emphasis on meteorology, hurricanes, and weather science
- Some sections feel dense with technical weather discussions
- Their playful rivalry and banter can occasionally feel a bit immature
- Medium steam
- Great summer setting if you’re in the mood for beach reads with substance
Final Thoughts
Chelsea Curto brings a fresh voice to STEM romance with a story that feels both educational and entertaining.
While the technical weather discussions occasionally slowed the pacing for me, I really enjoyed Quincy’s journey, Sebastian’s unwavering support, and the unique setting that made this romance stand apart from the crowd.
If you’re looking for a summer romance with rivals-to-lovers tension and don’t mind learning quite a bit about hurricanes along the way, this one is definitely worth adding to your TBR.
