H. Hunting nails her debut novel and I can’t wait for more!
I have always loved Helena Hunting’s books which are full of wit and humor, but I’m now loving her turn as H. Hunting with this grittier, more angsty, new adult romance.
This is Lavender and Kodiak’s book.
Two kids of professional hockey players that have known each other since they were babes.
We first meet them as children but this story takes us to the present where they are now young adults who, after a separation of years, find themselves together again on the same college campus. No longer the close friends they once were, but enemies.
A Story to Tug on ALL Your Heart Strings
Right from the start, you realize you are no longer in Helena Hunting land but have traveled into the darker, more intense world of H. Hunting.
Oh, how my heart truly bled for Lavender. As a child, she was this bundle of sweetness and yet she felt so deeply that she was often paralyzed by those feelings.
Her one true savior to help her escape the depth of those feelings was Kodiak. He could help her because he understood her. He too was a child trying to deal with the weight of the world and the emotions and thoughts he was bombarded with from his genius brain.
Without giving away spoilers, Hunting presents a gripping story that looks at whether you can truly find your soulmate as a young child. And if you can find that one person who truly “gets you,” how do you distinguish the line between support and dependence?
This is a fantastic book looking at childhood/teenage anxiety, overwhelm and PTSD. I thought Lavender had the most growth in the book where Kodiak was more the “victim” in that he suffered through the choices he made, feeling they were best for both their sakes.
It’s an incredible story told from dual points of view and with flashbacks that really solidify the connection that is simmering beneath the surface between Lavender and Kodiak as present day college students who are trying to steer clear of each other and yet drawn together at the same time.
If you’ve read any of Helena Hunting’s hockey romances, you’ll recognize some of the characters in this story.
While this can easily be read as a standalone, if you were to read one book before this one, I’d suggest A Secret for a Secret because it gives you a first glance at Lavender as a child.
Though if you really want a backstory on the parents, you should read Pucked for Alex and Violet Waters’ story (Lavender’s parents) and A Lie For A Lie for Rook and Lainey Bowman’s story (Kodiak’s parents), but I have not yet read A Lie for a Lie and I didn’t feel like I was missing anything.
But trust me, both of her hockey series are worth reading – just saying!
If you love new adult romance books with angst and those with the most satisfying of happy endings, you’ll want to read this book!
