Reel Summary:
Neevah Saint is ready for the spotlight. After months as an understudy, this is her night to shine. She never imagined he would be in the audience. Canon Holt. Famous film director. Fascinating. Talented. Fine.
Before she can catch her breath, everything is changing. Neevah goes from backstage Broadway to center stage Hollywood. From being unknown, to having her name on everyoneโs lips when Canon casts her as the lead in a star-studded Harlem Renaissance biopic.
But forbidden attraction, scandal, and circumstances beyond Neevahโs control soon put her dream in jeopardy. Could this one shotโthe role of a lifetime, the love of a lifetimeโcost her everything?
Reel: My Review
Kennedy Ryan never fails to WOW me with her writing. Reel is yet another book that weaves together her amazing writing, a unique and captivating storyline, and topics that educate in a meaningful way.
I imagine that it is easier to write a standard love story, but to use your craft as a love letter to Harlem Renaissance and Black creatives puts this book in its own category of amazing.
I started listening to the audiobook and the narrators are FANTASTIC. Listening to their voices I felt like I was along for the ride as Neeva and Canon worked hard to bring a biopic to the big screen while fighting their attraction to one another.
Neeva is a heroine that you are rooting for to get her big break after the heart-wrenching prologue. I loved her dedication to her character and the work she put forth in her first move role, but I also loved how Kennedy gave her such a strong backstory with her sister and her lupus diagnosis.
Canon was so smooth. This man knew what he stood for, demanded the best and got it most of the time. I loved his backstory as well, and how it came full circle with his attraction to Neeva.
The background of a movie set and Hollywood drama made for a story that pulled you in from the start. I especially love the push and pull of Verity and Monk who I know are getting their own book in Score, and I cannot wait for its release.
If you are a fan of Kennedy Ryan then this is a must-read. The Hollywood and music history, the education about a serious health condition, the family drama and the forbidden romance makes it the perfect package.
