What This Book Is About
Mercy wakes up with short-term amnesia that has erased one pretty significant part of her life: her entire marriage to Grant.
Grant is her older brotherโs best friend, an older, proper Englishman who comes from a completely different world than Mercy. She grew up in a trailer park with neglectful parents, while Grant comes from wealth and a high-society family. Heโs controlled, reserved and incredibly good at hiding what heโs feeling. Mercy speaks her mind, pushes every one of his buttons and has absolutely no problem ruffling his perfectly composed feathers.
Before Mercy lost her memory, these two had somehow gone from frenemies to a marriage of convenience to actually falling in love. Now Grant remembers all of it, while Mercy has no memory of loving him at all.
My Review of Until I Remember
Tackling the amnesia trope is no small feat, but I honestly think this may be Karla Sorensenโs best book to date. Iโve read at least three amnesia romances this year, and this is by far my favorite of them.
I will never understand why keeping information from someone with amnesia always seems like the best course of action in these books, so of course I spent part of Until I Remember wanting Grant to just TELL MERCY EVERYTHING. But eventually I understood why he was so cautious with her, especially knowing Mercyโs history of running when her feelings become too overwhelming.
And honestly, Grant is what made this book for me.
This man LOVES his wife. Mercy may not remember falling in love with him, but Grant remembers every bit of it, and you can feel how much it hurts him to have the woman he loves right there while also feeling completely out of reach.
The way he knows Mercy, understands what she needs and aches for her while trying so hard not to push her absolutely had my heart in a chokehold. Who wouldnโt want to be loved as hard as Grant loves Mercy? Tell me that!
Their opposite personalities also made them so much fun together. Grant is this proper Englishman who can school his facial expressions with the best of them, while Mercy says exactly what she thinks and has no problem antagonizing him. Karla gives us just enough of their history, including Grantโs friendship with Mercyโs older brother Connor, to understand how these two went from constantly ruffling each other to falling completely in love.
And that was what made the amnesia angle work so well for me. Weโre not just waiting for Mercy to remember Grant. Weโre watching her discover this man and their relationship all over again while Grant is desperately trying to give her the space to get there on her own.
There were also so many little pieces surrounding their romance that made this feel like a really full read without distracting from Grant and Mercy.
I loved seeing Grantโs mother and sister support Mercy and welcome her into their family. Even his terrifying high-society grandmother gets some surprisingly sweet moments with Mercy that showed just how much she loves Grant.
I also loved learning more about Mercy and why helping kids means so much to her. After growing up with parents who neglected her, she has built so much of her life around giving kids the kind of support she never had, both through teaching and the organizations she supports.
Thereโs grief here too, as both Mercy and Grant are still dealing with the loss of her brother, and that shared history adds another emotional layer to everything happening between them.
None of these pieces gets a huge amount of page time, but I didnโt need them to. The heart of this book is Grant and Mercy and whether they can find their way back to a love that only one of them remembers. And I was glued to the pages waiting for Mercy to remember what Grant already knew.
What I Loved
- Grantโs unwavering love for Mercy. Watching him love a woman who no longer remembers loving him was heartbreaking in the best way.
- Mercy constantly ruffling Grantโs feathers. Her sass paired with his very proper restraint made their opposites-attract chemistry so much fun.
- Grantโs family. His mother and sisterโs support of Mercy, plus those unexpected moments with his grandmother, added so much warmth.
- The pacing. I flew through this one because I needed to see Mercy and Grant find their way back to each other.
Final Thoughts
Iโve read quite a few amnesia romances lately, and Until I Remember is easily the one that worked best for me.
Yes, I wanted to shake Grant a few times and tell him to just give Mercy the whole story already, but the more I understood these two, the more I understood why he couldnโt. His love for Mercy is so obvious in everything he does, even when heโs trying desperately to hold it back and let her find her own way to him.
That combination of heartbreak, chemistry and Mercy being completely incapable of letting this very proper British man remain unruffled made this such a great read.
If you love amnesia romance, marriage of convenience and a hero who is already completely, hopelessly in love with his heroine, I highly recommend Until I Remember.
