Chase Me If You Can by Heather Frances: My Honest Review

My Full Review

This is such a wonderful debut and I cannot wait to read more from Heather Frances. Even if I wasn’t already hooked on the fact that this story focused on rival storm chasers (so unique!) I would have picked up this book on the gorgeous cover alone. It’s so beautiful and captures the book perfectly.

Right from the start, Heather immerses you into the world of storm chasers – people who drive thousands of miles over the course of a season, through multiple states to catch epic storms, see tornadoes and lightning strikes and hopefully, in Sloane and Wes’ case, catch it all on film and snag the coveted cover of a top magazine.

I really enjoyed learning about storm chasing which Heather describes really well while also building the tension between Sloane and Wes. You do learn quite a bit in the first half of the book but I feel like Heather’s writing and storytelling just got better and better as the book went on.

If you’ve ever seen the movie, Twisters, staring Glen Powell as Tyler, the daredevil storm chaser, then you have already gotten a glimpse of Wes’ personality. He’s a bit of a risktaker and more of a “act before thinking” type of guy which has always rubbed Sloane the wrong way but their chemistry was palpable from the start.

I love a great “he falls first” romance and Heather definitely nailed it with Wes. Plus, the forced proximity of Sloane taking pity on Wes when he destroys his truck and invites him to chase with her helped move their chemistry along until they both gave in.

What I like most about this story is that both Sloane and Wes have interesting backstories but Heather gives just enough to make them fully developed characters without detracting from their love story. The third act breakup also fit their underlying issue perfectly but of course worked out in the end.

If you are fascinated by tornadoes, storm chasing or just love a great forced proximity, rivals to lovers story then this is a great pick for summer that I highly recommend. Here’s to Heather being a new, fresh voice in romance with more to come!

What I Loved

• The storm chasing setting feels completely unique and immersive. You can tell that Heather draws from her personal experience, and the research is there without it feeling heavy

• Wes is peak he falls first energy: charming, reckless, and all in from the start

• The forced proximity works perfectly to build tension and payoff

• Strong character depth without overshadowing the romance

• The writing and pacing noticeably improve as the story goes on

Things to Know Before You Read

• The first half leans more into world-building and learning the storm chasing lifestyle

• Slightly slower start before the romance fully takes off

• Third act conflict is present, but fits the characters and relationship well

• If you loved the vibe of the movie Twisters, this will absolutely work for you as Wes gives off strong Glen Powell energy like his character Tyler

Final Thoughts

This is such a strong debut and one that genuinely stands out in the genre. If you love rivals-to-lovers with great tension and a hero who falls hard, this is an easy recommendation.
