What This Book Is About
NFL player Braden has spent his entire life working toward one goal: earning the kind of contract that will secure his family’s future. With so much riding on his success, the last thing he can afford is a distraction, especially one that could jeopardize everything he’s worked so hard to achieve.
Emily has always loved dance, but pursuing it professionally has left her questioning whether she’s chosen the “right” path, especially compared to her accomplished parents. When an undeniable attraction sparks between her and Braden, the league’s strict no-fraternization policy makes every stolen glance, late-night text, and secret meeting a risk neither of them should be willing to take.
My Review of Illegal Formation
Kandi Steiner has become one of my go-to authors for sports romance, so I couldn’t wait to dive into this forbidden romance between an NFL rookie and an NFL cheerleader. Between the instant chemistry, plenty of tension, and the very real consequences hanging over their relationship, Illegal Formation delivered exactly the fun, flirty sports romance I was hoping for.
Braden was easily my favorite part of this book. Yes, he’s a talented football player, but what defines him is his unwavering dedication to his family. Every decision he makes comes back to protecting the people he loves and securing a future for them, which made it easy to understand why he fought so hard against his feelings for Emily. Watching someone so focused on responsibility slowly allow himself to want something purely for himself made his emotional journey especially satisfying.
Emily was a wonderful counterpart to Braden. She’s confident, witty, and deeply passionate about dance, but underneath that confidence she’s quietly questioning whether she’s built a career she can truly be proud of. I loved watching her realize that many of the doubts she’d been carrying weren’t actually coming from her family, but from the expectations she’d placed on herself. Her journey toward believing that following her passion was enough felt just as rewarding as the romance.
The chemistry between Braden and Emily is immediate, but what ultimately sold me on their relationship wasn’t just the attraction. It was how naturally they encouraged one another to dream a little bigger. Emily reminds Braden that life can’t be all responsibility and sacrifice, while Braden becomes one of the first people to fully support Emily’s ambitions without making her feel like she has to justify them. Their relationship feels like two people giving each other permission to pursue happiness instead of simply surviving.
Of course, the forbidden nature of their relationship makes every interaction more exciting. I loved every lingering glance across the field, every secret text message, and every moment where they questioned whether following the rules was worth giving up what they were beginning to build together.
Emily’s personality occasionally felt a little more impulsive than I would have liked, particularly compared to Braden’s much more cautious approach. Knowing everything Braden stood to lose, I sometimes found myself wishing she better appreciated the stakes. Thankfully, their emotional connection continued to grow, and the ending delivered the satisfying payoff I was hoping for.
Even though this is the final book in the Red Zone Rivals series, it works well as a standalone. Returning readers will enjoy seeing familiar faces, but new readers can jump in without feeling lost.
I received an advance reader copy. All opinions are my own.

Final Thoughts
Illegal Formation is an entertaining forbidden sports romance with fantastic chemistry, memorable emotional stakes, and a hero who completely won me over. While I occasionally wanted Emily to better understand everything Braden had on the line, their relationship ultimately felt believable because they encouraged one another to pursue the lives they truly wanted.
If you’re looking for a steamy football romance with plenty of tension, heartfelt family moments, and a satisfying happily ever after, this is another strong addition to Kandi Steiner’s sports romance lineup.
