Some Kind of Famous Summary:
Itโs been a decade since Merritt Valentineโs height as a celebrated singer-songwriter . . . and her subsequent career-ending mental breakdown. In the following years, sheโs abandoned the glitz of Los Angeles to move in with her sister, Olivia, in the sleepy Colorado ski town of Crested Peak, hoping to heal her lingering emotional wounds somewhere out of the spotlight.
Life in Crested Peak would be uncomplicated if not for Merrittโs inconvenient crush on the local contractor and handyman, Nikolaos Petrakis. Niko is disarmingly handsome and too kind-hearted to ever be right for the complex and prickly Merritt. Though tempting, a fling with Niko would only invite the kind of drama Merritt has vowed to leave behind.
After his last heartbreak, Niko is done dating his fellow townies. Still, he canโt shake his fascination with the brilliant Merritt, even as he heeds their mutual friendsโ warnings to steer clear of her chaos. But when Merritt needs help fixing up a house of her own, Niko is glad to be the only man for the job.
As the two spend more time together, their mutual attraction sparking a deeper connection than either one expects, theyโre forced to confront the idea that they may have underestimated each otherโand themselves.
Some Kind of Famous: My Review
I think I write this in every review after reading an Ava Wilder book, and that is that she writes the most incredibly real characters. I know that fiction is fiction but thereโs just something about reading a book with characters who are human – ย and in being human, I mean being devastatingly flawed or vulnerable in some way that always gets me about Avaโs work.
Some Kind of Famous is about Merritt, a singer/songwriter who fled the business ten years ago and who is now living in a small town in Colorado with her twin sister. This woman has been through it you guys and luckily made it on the other side of fame but not without her scars.
There is honestly so much to love about Merritt, her tragic backstory and her sweet love story with the local contractor.
Merritt has a complicated relationship with her mother, but a strong love for her sister even though that relationship has its strained moments as well.
Her scars and history of toxic patterns make her initially shy away from her attraction to the Greek hottie in town but also because her sister and brother-in-law warn her to stay away from Niko who agrees to fix up her home.
But Merritt and Niko had this connection which was so evident on the page that I was happy to soak up every minute of their slow burn love story as they navigated their feelings, complex relationship and pasts that inevitably impact their future.
I loved Merritt for her strength to take care of her mental and physical health when she finally got away from her music life in LA.
Niko was just as compelling as a character. A man who struggled with never feeling certain about whether he truly mattered to anyone given his past and yet who became integral to this small community in Colorado. Every reference to his favorite Greek foods are mine as well!
And if you love romance characters who say sweet nothings to the heroine in another language then Niko will make you swoon!
โYou make me want to turn my whole goddamn life upside down.โ
If youโre looking for a romance with real, flawed people but with big hearts who find the person with whom they can truly be themselves and bare their battered souls, then this is the book for you.
Ava Wilder is truly a unique voice in the world of romance. I adore her writing style and the way that she makes me fall so hard for her characters who are so deserving of a happily ever after.
I cannot recommend Some Kind of Famous (and all of Avaโs books!) enough.
I received an advanced reader copy. All opinions are my own.
