The Four Engagement Rings of Sybil Rain Summary:
Sybil canโt wait to escape to a tropical paradise, all expenses paid. Well, technically the expenses were paidโlast year, when she was supposed to honeymoon in Hawaii with her then-fiancรฉ, Jamie. But the wedding didnโt go as planned (or at all), and now sheโs using those hotel vouchers to enjoy some mai tais, med spas, and me-time.
But she nearly plunges backwards into the infinity pool when she sees Jamie there, too. Heโs on a work trip representing his familyโs firm, alongside his gorgeous, tangerine bikini-clad โcolleague.โ
Desperate to save face in front of the ex who broke her heart at the altar, Sybil accidentally-on-purpose blurts out that sheโs vacationing with her boyfriend. But what starts as a harmless lie soon spirals into an ex-fiancรฉ fiasco when Sebastianโthe second of Sybilโs three failed engagementsโpops by, fresh off a photography gig. Sebโs always up for a good time and happy to play along . . . sparking unexpected jealousy in Jamie.
From snorkeling snafus to stunning vistas to beach parties, Sybil does her best to juggle two ex-fiancรฉs. But itโs becoming clear that her past of broken promises must be reckoned with once and for allโincluding that first fiancรฉ, Liam, the one she never talks about . . .
Is the notorious free-spirit, life-of-the-party, runaway bride Sybil Rain ready to heal from her three past engagements and make room in her heart for a fourth and final chance at love?
The Four Engagement Rings of Sybil Rain: My Review
Ever since I read Brownโs debut novel, Mistakes We Never Made, I was desperate for Sybilโs story. It was set up so perfectly in that novel so I instantly dove into my copy of The Four Engagement Rings of Sybil Rain to discover who sheโd find her happily ever after with.
Iโm happy to discover that Hannah Brown crushed it with her second novel which I loved even more than her debut and Iโm all the more excited to see what comes next (I NEED Nikkiโs story!!).
What I loved most about this story was the character arc of Sybil. Sheโs a bit of a mess only because sheโs a free spirit. Sheโs been engaged three times, floated from job to job and never finished college. From the outside youโd write her off as someone who doesnโt have her act together but you come to discover that sheโs someone who feels hard and who has had to process a lot of traumatic events in her life, mostly alone.
As the story unfolds, you come to learn more about her wedding with Jamie was called off as well as her other past relationships. I loved that she and Jamie were reconnected at a beautiful resort and how they kept running into each other no matter how awkward that felt for Sybil.
Her attempt to pass off her previous ex-fiance as her current, fake boyfriend was a fun twist as well as Seb was quite the opposite of Jamie but really embraced the role.
I also really loved the fact that Sybil worked for a period panty company. It was fun seeing her reel ideas for her work trip.
Iโm really loving this series by Brown and cannot wait to get the next story of this tight friend group. Nikki really deserves her happily ever after and I cannot wait to read her story given the hints that have been dropped in this one.
Even if you havenโt read Mistakes We Never Made, I think you can jump right into this one and read it as a standalone. Itโs a great summer read that will have you wishing you were on the beaches of Hawaii along with them.
*I received an advanced reader copy. All opinions are my own.
