My Review of The Muse
Jewel E. Ann has a rare gift for writing stories that make your heart ache for fictional characters while simultaneously leaving you grateful for the beauty of human connection. Every time I pick up one of her books, I prepare myself emotionally and make sure tissues are within reach. The Muse absolutely delivered on that front, but what surprised me most was just how funny it was.
The banter in this book is some of the best I’ve ever read.
Within the first chapter, Jewel establishes the sharp, witty dialogue that carries the entire story. There are plenty of emotional moments throughout, but what kept me completely glued to the pages was how effortlessly these characters talked to one another. The conversations felt authentic, hilarious, insightful, and deeply revealing all at once. There were multiple scenes where I found myself laughing out loud before immediately getting hit with an emotional gut punch a few pages later.
The standout relationship for me was actually Flynn and Rupert’s relationship. The back-and-forth between them when Rupert hires Flynn as a muse for his wife is comedy gold. Their exchanges are packed with sarcasm, quick-witted one-liners, and the kind of effortless chemistry that makes every scene together entertaining. I honestly could have read an entire book of just those two trading insults.
But as much as I loved the supporting cast, Flynn completely stole the show.
He’s the kind of hero who could have easily been written as hardened or cynical given everything he’s endured. Instead, he’s remarkably earnest. He comes from nothing, has very little, and has faced more hardship than most people ever should. Yet he approaches life with kindness, humility, and an openness that made him impossible not to love.
One of my favorite aspects of his character was how comfortable he was not knowing things. Rather than becoming defensive about his lack of education or experience, Flynn remains curious and willing to learn. That vulnerability made him feel incredibly authentic and only amplified the emotional impact of watching him fall for June.
The romance itself develops quickly, so readers who need a prolonged slow burn may struggle with the pacing. For me, though, the emotional connection was so strong that I never questioned their feelings. Jewel does an excellent job showing why these two people fit together despite their differences, making their opposites attract dynamic feel completely believable.
As with several books in the Lakes series, Jewel starts with a premise that initially feels unusual but uses it to explore larger themes about wealth, privilege, intimacy, and human connection. The concept of Flynn serving as a muse could have felt gimmicky in another author’s hands, but here it becomes a vehicle for some really thoughtful conversations and emotional growth.
More than anything, this is a story about two people who have experienced profound loss and hardship finding something extraordinary in each other. It’s heartbreaking at times, hopeful at others, and ultimately incredibly rewarding.

The Muse is another reminder of why Jewel E. Ann remains one of my favorite contemporary romance authors. While the emotional depth and heartbreak were exactly what I expected from her, the humor and banter ended up being the true standout of this story.
If you’re someone who loves character-driven romance, exceptional dialogue, and heroes who completely steal your heart, I would prioritize this one. Flynn is the type of romance hero who stays with you long after you’ve finished reading, and his love story with June delivered both the emotional depth and satisfying payoff I was hoping for.
This book absolutely met my expectations and then exceeded them in a few surprising ways. I closed the final page feeling both emotionally wrecked and deeply satisfied, which is exactly what I want from a Jewel E. Ann romance.
I will happily continue reading anything she writes next.
