Rating: ★★★½
I was in the mood for a rock star romance so I gave this one a go as A.L. Jackson has been an author on my to read list for so long! This is the second book in the Falling Stars series about the band members of Carolina George but I read this as a standalone. Overall, I’d say this was a well written book that most readers will like if you’re a fan of rock star romance or even romantic suspense.
Catch Me When I Fall gives us the story of the lead singer of Carolina George, Emily, and the record producer who’s set on signing the band to his label, Royce. One night when she’s feeling down, Emily finds comfort in the arms of a man who can finally give her the peace she’s been desperate for. Only she doesn’t realize until the morning after that the man is the record producer who is dead set on signing their band. In an attempt to convince the band and Emily to sign a contract, Royce tags along on their tour bus when things continue to heat up between these two. Only Royce is hiding secrets. His goal is to not only sign the band but to follow through on a plan of revenge to save his family.
I really liked the chemistry between Emily and Royce which was palpable from their very first encounter. They are similar in many ways and he becomes her protector, savior and biggest champion at a time when she most needs it. This story, however, is definitely a case of instalove and there really isn’t much time that goes by on the road where they fall for each other. I like to believe in love at first sight so I just went with it. Most of their interactions at the beginning is focused on fighting their attraction and talking about why it was a bad idea to start something when they could have been spending some time actually getting to know each other.
While I think the writing was great, it was definitely overly descriptive to the point where I would find myself scanning sentences to get to the point. It was also a LONG road to get traction on the hidden story line that was continually hinted at but wasn’t brought to the surface until the last few chapters. I’m not a huge fan of romantic suspense so this probably won’t bug fans who are.
The storyline also touches on a topic that I ALWAYS steer clear of as a trigger warning which is why this book wasn’t a higher rating for me. I realized where the story was going early on but I wanted to stick with it. The trigger wasn’t thrown in my face too much but again, it’s not a topic that I care to read about so that alone soured me on the story where it may not bother someone else.
Even though this is the second book in the series, I didn’t feel lost not having read the first book. Other band members were mentioned here and there but nothing about them really captivated me with the exception of Emily’s brother Richard so maybe I’ll check out this story if it comes.
I’m glad I read it and I’m sure some will love it. Especially those who love rock stars!
