Romance heroes come in all shapes, sizes, occupations, and orientations but it’s a certain skill set that I adore most in my favorite book boyfriends and that’s dirty talk!
Dirty talk is really just a way to describe the words, phrases, comments, and speech used between partners to arouse or seduce.
Dirty talk can be used to:
- build anticipation,
- set the mood,
- be in the moment,
- share feelings and desires,
- offer observations, requests or recognitions.
When used in romance novels, it can be used for any of these reasons as well as to help set the scene in open-door romances.
You may think it’s only the alpha males who have a way with their words, but you can find dirty talkers in any romance.
Many of the authors below have found their groove with dirty talk and boy do they write it well for their characters.
If you’re a fan of dirty talkers or want to check out what this may sound like (or perhaps get some ideas!) then check out the romance books below.
My Favorite Dirty Talkers in Romance:
Follow
by Tessa Bailey
When Teresa Valentini’s brother lands himself in hot water with a New York crime boss, she’s willing to do whatever it takes to save him.
Will Caruso is the bad boy of New York’s financial scene, and he just found out the very thing that drives his success is a lie.
Now, he’s exchanged his high-stress life for the open road, no one but his Great Dane.
When he runs into a mysterious beauty, her secrecy prods his suspicions, even while she tempts his lust to the breaking point.
Teresa met Will under false pretenses and yet the bond consuming them is real. But will they be strong enough to overcome a little betrayal?
The Dirty Talker: Will Caruso
This book jump-starts the list because OMG the mouth on Will.
Seriously, if you’re not all about the dirty talkers, then just skip over this one because this man BRINGS IT!
From the start, Will knows that Teresa is not being upfront about something but that doesn’t stop him from pursuing her into his bed and telling her everything he wants to do to her.
Buckle up for this one folks – it’s one hot ride!
Carnal Urges
by J.T. Geissinger
Declan blames me for starting this battle. Consorting with his enemies. Getting his men offed.
Though I’m innocent on all charges, he wants his pound of flesh and makes me his captive.
But as we’ll both soon discover, there are more powerful urges than sticking it to your enemy.
The Dirty Talker: Declan O’Donnell
First off you have to imagine the best Irish accent whenever Declan is speaking. It totally adds to his seriously hot dirty talk!
This book is a bit of an enemies to lovers romp given Declan takes Sloane and holds her against her will. But OMG Sloane can give as good as she gets which generates some intense chemistry between these two.
It’s when their chemistry comes together and his mouth starts moving that things really get good.
His dirty-talking ways earned him the title of Best Dirty Talker in my Best of 2021 romance book list.
The Rivals
by Vi Keeland
The Lockwood and the Sterling families have been feuding for years, and that hasn’t changed now that they are co-owners of a luxury hotel.
Weston Lockwood has never failed to push all of Sophia Sterling’s buttons and get under her skin. The trouble is, every time they fight, she somehow winds up under HIM.
The Dirty Talker: Weston Lockwood
I owe Weston for getting me started tagging my book boyfriends as dirty talkers.
His smooth-talking ways in this epic, enemies to lovers romance just hooked me from the start and had me on a hunt for even more dirty talkers to collect.
Since he and Sophia are from feuding families, their passion ignited behind closed doors and that’s when he turned on the magic which earned him the title of best dirty talker of the year in 2020.
I highlighted so many passages in this book and couldn’t get enough of Weston! My Review.
Sinner
by Sierra Simone
Sean no longer believes in God. So it shouldn’t be a problem that his best friend’s little sister wants him to sleep with her and show her everything she’s giving up because she’s becoming a nun.
The Dirty Talker: Sean Bell
Would you really expect anything less from a total playboy womanizer than for him to be one hot dirty talker? I hope not!
Leave it to Sean to not let a little detail such as Zenny on her way to becoming a nun (and the fact that she’s a virgin) from stopping his hot mouth.
I mean Zenny asks him to show her everything she will be missing once she completes her vows and he doesn’t hold anything back in practice or in words. My Review.
Pin This for Later:
The Penalty Box
by Odette Stone
I’m the personal assistant at a sports agency that no one notices.
I don’t like sports and I’m indifferent to the mostly male clientele, except for one. Mica “the savage” Petrov.
Mica is a professional hockey player who lives on the edge. He’s reckless, wild and carelessly charming.
I may be attracted to him but he hasn’t taken a second look at me in two years.
Mica’s career jeopardizing situation requires drastic measures to be taken to keep him in the game.
He’s got money, I’ve got debt and my boss has a crazy idea. Which is how I found myself stepping up to save him from himself.
The Dirty Talker: Mica Petrov
Now, this professional hockey player can get down and dirty on the ice but it’s his mouth that is dirtier than his play!
I adore fake relationship stories and it was fun to see this slow burn take off when neither Mica or Charlie really wanted a relationship.
But once they are under one roof, the chemistry cannot be denied and Mica’s words…oh lordy!
Word of caution that there should be some trigger warnings with this one and there is a bit of suspense to the storyline but it’s worth hearing what Mica has to say 😊.
Hothead
by Stella Rhys
Drew is a hot MLB star who’s worried that his job is on the chopping block because of his hothead reputation.
To turn things around, he proposes a fake relationship to Evie, a girl desperate to make her ex-fiance jealous.
The Dirty Talker: Drew Maddox
Here’s another dirty talking athlete, but this time it’s a hot baseball player who has a way with words.
From the moment Drew and Evie butted heads, after he overheard a cringeworthy voicemail she left her ex, their banter was spot on.
For two people entering a fake relationship, they sure do hit it off and play off each other well. I adored this book and loved Drew to pieces. My Review.
Knot My Type
by Evie Mitchell
As the host of the All Access Podcast, I’m breaking barriers, crushing stigmas, and creating connections that are fulfilling for my fans.
When a listener wants some advice about accessible rope play I have no other option but to reach out to Jay Wood—rigger, carpenter, and all-round hottie.
I’d be open to letting him wine and dine me—only Jay isn’t my type. He’s not a one-girl kind of guy.
But there’s something about Jay has me tied up in knots.
And it’s making me think, maybe I could compromise and accept a little Wood in my life. Even if it’s only temporary.
The Dirty Talker: Jay Wood
I loved the reason that brings Jay and Frankie together in this book. She’s trying to learn more about accessible rope play and Jay just happens to be a master rigger who teaches Shibari lessons at the local club.
When Jay demonstrates how to use rope play with Frankie as his model, the heat is on between these two.
Jay is a totally down-to-earth guy but he doesn’t hold back when he’s in the bedroom. I loved this so much!
Beautiful Bastard
by Christina Lauren
Bennett has returned to Chicago from France to take a vital role in his family’s massive media business.
He never expected that the assistant who’d been helping him from abroad was the gorgeous, innocently provocative–completely infuriating–creature he now has to see every day.
Despite the rumors, he’s never been one for a workplace hookup.
But Chloe’s so tempting he’s willing to bend the rules–or outright smash them–if it means he can have her. All over the office.
As their appetites for one another increase to a breaking point, Bennett and Chloe must decide exactly what they’re willing to lose in order to win each other.
The Dirty Talker: Bennett Ryan
Bennett is a total alpha boss who knows control. I loved how Chloe could work this man UP to the point that it didn’t matter if they were in a stairwell, bathroom, or boardroom.
Once the line was crossed between boss and assistant in this office romance, that’s when his dirty talk really worked its magic.
The Perfect Catch
by Meghan Quinn
As the most hated player in baseball, I had two options: either clean up my image or pack my bags.
That’s how I found myself sharing a small bistro table with Kate Chapman, the Chicago Bobbies newest PR Manager.
It was supposed to be simple. Book some PR events, show up, smile for the camera, and be done.
But one massive mistake on my end sends me into the trenches with Kate, forcing me to open up to her.
I’ve never wanted a woman as much as I want her. And I know she wants me, but there’s a no fraternizing with the players rule.
Neither of us can afford to lose our jobs, but we also can’t seem to keep our hands off each other either.
The Dirty Talker: Walker Rockwell
Walker is one of the best dirty talkers because it was totally unexpected.
Sure, he’s the most hated man in baseball, and puts off a “don’t mess with me” vibe, but get him to share what he really wants to do with the woman he can’t have and it is HOT.
The forbidden nature to his relationship with Kate given her work with the baseball team had him really upping his game in this sports romance.
