This was a cute, new adult romance where the nerd scores the beauty.
Mick and Jolie met over the summer while both are working as counselors at summer camp. Those days were spent watching kids while sneaking off and humping like rabbits whenever and wherever they could. Who knew they’d meet up again at college where Jolie is a returning junior and Mick a new transfer student.
Though they had a hot and heavy summer, they are complete opposites. He’s the nerd – super intelligent, focused on his studies and goal to get into medical school early. She’s the beautiful rich girl whose Daddy has always gotten her out of trouble until the one time he didn’t. She’s a bit wild but now has a secret she’s keeping. Now that these two are on the same campus, is it possible for two opposites to find more than a summer fling?
This was my first Carrie Aarons book and the whole nerd scores the popular girl angle totally sold me on this read. I thought her writing was solid and I liked how the story was told with dual points of view. The prologue was the perfect setting off point for this novel and was fantastic. It really set up the chemistry between these two characters making me want to read more.
The best part of the book was Mick. Though he may consider himself a nerd (just because he’s smart and doesn’t party), he’s anything but and quite the perfect boyfriend. He’s helpful, considerate, empathetic and sure knows how to please a girl. He’s a catch in my opinion. I liked that he didn’t have that much of a complex about his self-professed “nerd” status but came off as a pretty confident guy.
I couldn’t help but peg Jolie as the slightly dense, party girl she didn’t want to be known as, but so many of her actions sort of fit the role. Her reaction to seeing Mick for the first time on college campus pretty much snubbing him in front of her friends was example enough. It was hard to follow what exactly her struggle was in this story. Was it her disinterested parents? The fact that people pegged her as a rich girl who didn’t have any problems? Was it that she was secretly seeing a guy nowhere near her usual type? Or, was it just the fact that she was hiding her secret – which didn’t really seem like something she had to hide in the first place? I also didn’t understand her hang ups about them being together when he was so honest, upfront and such a nice guy.
Despite not being each other’s type, they end up carrying on their fling which of course turns into something more. I thought they were actually really great together so yay to the happy ending. Overall a cute story if you’re into new adult romance, opposites attract stories and college romances!
*Thank you to Carrie Aarons for the advanced reader copy. All opinions are my own.
