My Review of Our Perfect Storm
Did I just read my favorite Carley Fortune book? I honestly think I did.
Our Perfect Storm was one of my most anticipated summer romance releases of 2026, and somehow it still exceeded my expectations. Carley Fortune has always been incredible at creating atmosphere and emotional tension, but this felt like the most emotionally satisfying romance she’s written yet.
From the prologue alone, I was hooked. Watching George and Frankie meet as eight-year-olds immediately establishes this deep emotional foundation between them, which makes the jump to the present-day wedding weekend absolutely devastating. The fact that Frankie is about to marry someone else while being completely consumed by George’s absence tells you everything you need to know before the story even fully begins. I desperately needed to understand what happened between them and how these two people who were clearly soulmates ended up here.
And then there’s George.
This man is yearning personified.
What makes him such an unforgettable hero isn’t grand speeches or overly dramatic declarations. It’s the way Fortune lets his feelings leak through every action, every reaction, every moment of restraint. The emotional intelligence in this book is so well done because she trusts the reader to see it without overexplaining it. George researching breakup recovery methods and creating “The Plan” for Frankie could have come across gimmicky in another book, but here it became one of the most romantic things imaginable because it perfectly captured who he is – thoughtful, patient, devoted, and quietly desperate for more.
I also loved how much frustration and hurt George carried beneath the surface whenever Frankie continued to place him inside the “best friend” box while he was so clearly trying to survive loving her from the sidelines. The emotional tension in this book is almost unbearable in the best possible way because you can feel how badly he wants her while also understanding why he never pushes her before she’s ready.
And Frankie’s journey worked equally well for me. Watching her slowly unpack feelings she’d spent years suppressing felt incredibly believable. I appreciated that her emotional growth wasn’t rushed and that she allowed herself both the courage to finally go after what she wanted and the space to process everything she’d been avoiding.
The setting also deserves its own paragraph because Carley Fortune truly has a gift for making a place feel romantic. Tofino absolutely came alive on the page. Between the rainforest setting, the beaches, the whale watching, and the dreamy resort atmosphere, this book made me want to immediately book a trip to Vancouver Island. Canada honestly owes Carley Fortune a tourism sponsorship at this point because she consistently makes every setting feel intoxicatingly cozy and romantic.
What impressed me most, though, was how balanced the entire story felt. Both characters had real emotional depth, complicated family dynamics, and fully developed lives outside the romance, yet none of it distracted from the core relationship. Everything strengthened the emotional payoff instead of pulling focus from it.
Some romance novels have one standout element. Maybe the chemistry works or the setting shines or the writing is beautiful.
This book had the complete package.
The writing was immersive, the yearning was achingly good, the characters felt unforgettable, and the romance genuinely made my chest hurt at times. This is exactly the kind of friends-to-lovers romance I want more of.

Carley Fortune’s writing continues to get stronger with every release, and this felt like the perfect blend of everything she does best – emotional tension, atmospheric settings, emotionally restrained characters, and romances that feel achingly intimate.
I already want to reread it, and honestly? George is going to be very hard to top this year.
