What This Book Is About
Rules for the Summer kicks off with one of the funniest romance setups Meghan Quinn has written yet thanks to a completely ridiculous miscommunication that somehow leads Theo flying across the pond and dropping to one knee the moment he meets Renley.
Renley has just taken over a struggling candy shop and desperately needs funding to prove to everyone in her life that she can actually make something work. Theo, meanwhile, has his own reasons for wanting to show the people around him that heโs capable of more than they expect. What starts as total chaos quickly turns into an irresistible summer living side by side as neighbors with instant chemistry neither of them can ignore.
Of course, their attempts to keep things โplatonicโ only lead to a growing list of rules, nightly escapes to a private pond, escalating truth or dare antics, and a whole lot of tension neither of them is particularly good at resisting.
My Review of Rules for the Summer
Rules for the Summer was one of my most anticipated summer romance releases and thankfully it delivered exactly what I wanted from a Meghan Quinn romance.
This book is outrageously funny in the best way. Meghan Quinn continues to prove that she has such a unique ability to take completely absurd situations and somehow make them feel wildly entertaining instead of overdone. The meet cute alone had me laughing immediately and the humor never really lets up from there.
But what worked so well for me is that underneath all the chaos and ridiculousness, Theo and Renley actually had strong chemistry and emotional compatibility. Their attraction feels immediate, but the growing friendship underneath the flirting, rule-making, and truth or dare shenanigans gives the romance enough grounding that you stay invested beyond the humor.
Theo was especially charming because he isnโt your stereotypical hyper-dominant alpha hero. Heโs sincere, supportive, willing to learn new things, and fully invested in helping Renley succeed. At the same time, the man absolutely delivers when it comes to dirty talk and chemistry. Meghan balanced his softer personality with plenty of heat which made him incredibly appealing.
Renley also worked well for me because her determination and need to prove herself never felt forced. Watching her slowly let her guard down over the course of the summer added some emotional depth to a romance that otherwise leans heavily into comedy.
And honestly? Rupert and Renleyโs Aunt Kitty nearly stole the entire book for me. Rupertโs friendship with Theo created some of the funniest moments in the story and their bromance added so much personality to the book. Meanwhile, the bizarre chemistry brewing between Rupert and Aunt Kitty was cringe-inducing in the most entertaining way possible. Every scene involving the hobby horse obsession somehow became funnier the more committed everyone was to the bit.
I also loved how the โrulesโ between Theo and Renley kept evolving throughout the story. The constant amendments to what technically counted as platonic combined with the ongoing truth or dare games made the pacing feel playful and addictive from start to finish.
This isnโt a romance that spends a ton of time digging deep into complicated backstories or small-town development, but honestly, it didnโt need to. The strength of the humor, chemistry, and character dynamics carried the story effortlessly.
What I Loved
- The completely unhinged meet cute setup
- Theo and Renleyโs instant chemistry
- The evolving โrulesโ between them
- The truth or dare tension throughout the book
- Rupert and Theoโs hilarious bromance
- Renleyโs aunt being delightfully chaotic
- Theoโs sincerity mixed with excellent dirty talk
- Summer romance vibes that made this incredibly bingeable
Things to Know Before You Read
- Standalone romance
- Heavy on humor and chaotic antics
- More chemistry-driven than deeply emotional
- Not a ton of detailed backstory or small-town development
- Includes ongoing truth or dare games and escalating dares
- Frequent mentions of hobby horse
- Steamy romance with open-door scenes
Final Thoughts
If you read romance for the banter, chaos, chemistry, and characters that make you laugh out loud, Rules for the Summer absolutely delivers.
Meghan Quinn somehow continues to come up with fresh romantic setups even after writing so many books, and this one felt like the perfect summer escape. Itโs funny, steamy, ridiculous, and genuinely entertaining from beginning to end.
While readers looking for deeply emotional angst or highly layered character backstories may want something heavier, this was exactly the kind of playful summer romance I wanted to sink into by the pool.
Come for the hilarious miscommunication and chemistry. Stay for Rupert, Aunt Kitty, the ever-changing rules, and the absolute nonsense that somehow works perfectly.
