Tender Cruelty Summary:
The barrier that’s protected Olympus for generations has fallen. The enemy’s breached the gates and the Thirteen are scrambling to protect themselves, their loved ones, and the city they’ve sworn to protect. At least they would be if they weren’t at each others’ throats instead.
Hera has no intention of letting her husband, Zeus, survive the oncoming storm. But despite the white-hot hatred burning between them, when Hera and Zeus are forced to work together, enmity crystalizes into something brighter. Hotter. Too powerful to deny or destroy.
Hera never bartered on falling in love with the man she marriedโthe man she once swore to kill. But now, standing back-to-back in the ruins of Olympus, she may be forced to admit that she’s been wrong about Zeus all these yearsโฆand there may be something about their marriage worth saving if they can survive long enough to turn sworn enemies into something more.
Tender Cruelty: My Review
Finally! The Hera and Zeus story Iโve been waiting forโฆ.and it delivered!
Ever since reading Electric Idol, book two in the Dark Olympus series, I was CAPTIVATED by Hera and Zeus. After reading Tender Cruelty, I can forgive Katee Robert for making me wait SO LONG to finally get their story because it had the hatred and angst and quiet vulnerability that I was hoping it would.
So yes, I think so much of this story is the buildup that you get from reading the prior books in the series, so just go ahead and binge-read them before diving into this one.
Iโm such a sucker for enemies to lovers romance books but to have these enemies already as husband and wife was just chefโs kiss.
Because weโve known that they are married from previous books, you dive right into the current time and setting of the series so you donโt get a lot of backstory as to how they came to wed or what their life has been like up until this point with a few exceptions.
What you do get is flickers of their jealousy, and the love that has grown between them despite their best attempts to ignore it or prevent it from occurring.
Hera and Zeus have the best (yet tender) hate sex, and they have it every night thanks to the agreement they made upon their engagement and wedding since Zeus needs an heir. I LOVED Zeusโ need for explicit consent each and every time he was with Hera and how much she would fight him up until the point she was in his bed.
Would I have liked more of their respective backstories? Yes of course, but Iโve come to understand that youโre going to get a continuation of the story of Olympusโs downfall while also having two or more characters fall in love pretty quickly in the timeframe of their own book.
For this one, I felt like we got enough to understand Callistoโs motivations from both the past and present as well as glimpses to Perseusโ history with his father to understand his motivations and internal struggles as well. His brief conversation with Hercules is the perfect example and something I really appreciated in this one.
I also really loved the brief instances that we see of Hades because he’s just the man and then some.
If youโve been reading this series then Iโm sure itโs a given that you will read it because itโs finally Hera and Zeus. I think Katee did a great job delivering on their chemistry, the tension between them and setting the stage for the final book to come.
*I received an advanced reader copy. All opinions are my own.
