Dr. Nicole Allen is about to start a prestigious fellowship but when she disciplines an intern—a powerful donor’s son—her job is placed in jeopardy. She’s always been able to depend on her friend and neighbor, Ben. So when he’s willing to have his family intervene on her behalf, Nic decides to help him in return, posing as his fake girlfriend for the week to ward off his ex-fiance.
This was my first Lovesay novel and it won’t be my last! It was a fantastic contemporary romance with a friends to lovers, fake relationship love story.
Although this is book two in the Girls Trip series, it can easily be read as a standalone. The close knit friendships came through in this novel but they weren’t a major part of the story.
You learn in the acknowledgements that Lovesay based this series on her real friendship circle which I think is fantastic. Both characters had strong friendship circles who were really more than friends – they were their family.
I was instantly taken in with the story because this book is well written. It really hits home when an author just has a way with words and Livesay really does.
There is so much to this story but I loved the friendship to lovers aspect the most. You can tell right away how much Ben values his friendship with her and vice versa.
Both characters are well written and fully explored so you understand what’s driving them. Nic is a go-getter doctor and is driven by her upbringing but I appreciate that she wasn’t stereotyped for wanting her career.
I especially liked that Nic and Ben were an interracial couple. I have not read enough romance books featuring interracial couples so it was an aspect I really enjoyed. Their racial differences were addressed but they weren’t the main story between then.
Yet, why his friend group still hung out with Tinsley is beyond me. She acted like such a brat and her racial remarks should have sent her packing.
The ending for me wasn’t quite as solid which is why it wasn’t a 5 star for me but I loved it and will be sure to check out the rest of the series.
