Reading romance books is my jam, so when it is announced that one of my all-time favorite romance novels and one of the best romance novels of 2021 is getting a film adaptation, I’m doing a happy dance!
What novel am I talking about? People We Meet on Vacation by Emily Henry of course! But I’m not the only one who fell madly in love with this romance. Emily Henry’s romance book, People We Meet on Vacation released in 2021 and debuted at number one on the New York Times bestseller list.
Readers chose People We Meet on Vacation as the best romance book in the 2021 Goodreads Choice Awards, and the book was listed as one of the best books of 2021 by Kirkus Reviews. It also made my list of best romance novels of 2021 – just saying!
People We Meet on Vacation Movie Plot: What’s It About?
Since this is a film adaptation, we can assume that the movie will follow the main points of the written story though we can’t disregard that there may be some changes to the film.
In Henry’s announcement of the film adaptation, she shared that the screenwriter wrote new jokes that felt so perfectly attuned to Alex and Poppy.
She also felt like the screenwriter and director “both understand the heart of the book, and care deeply about making a film version of it that brings out the very best of the book.”
People We Meet on Vacation follows Poppy and Alex. Two complete opposites who meet in college and become the most unlikely of best friends.
Despite living in two different cities, every summer they vacation for a week together in a new location until two years ago when things were ruined.
Not speaking since that fateful trip, Poppy realizes she needs to fix things and asks Alex to take one more vacation with her so that they can lay everything out on the table and make it right.

Who is Developing the People We Meet on Vacation Movie?
On October 11, 2022, it was announced that 3000 Pictures would be adapting People We Meet On Vacation with Brett Haley as the director of the film.
Haley is no stranger to book-to-movie adaptations as he worked on All The Bright Places starring Elle Fanning.
Yulin Kuang signed on to adapt the screenplay which is already finished.
Emily Henry talked about the screenplay to her newsletter subscribers on October 11, 2022:
“I love it so much that when I finished reading and set it aside, I just started weeping. I felt seen in the exact way that Alex’s story made Poppy feel seen. It’s like Yulin reached into my heart and brain and pulled these characters outside of my body.”

This makes me so happy that she is fully on board and supportive of this project and screenplay. I can only imagine how good it is because Kuang is also no stranger to the romance genre.
She is currently adapting/directing a TV series based on the film 27 Dresses with Aline Brosh McKenna producing for ABC Studios, as well as a Jane Austen-inspired series called Hopeless Romantics for Paramount TV. Plus she wrote her own romance, How to End a Love Story.
Who is Cast for the People We Meet on Vacation Movie?
Emily Henry announced the casting of Alex and Popppy for the People We Meet on Vacation movie on August 2, 2024 and I couldn’t be more thrilled!
Poppy will be played by Emily Bader of My Lady Jane and Alex will be played by Tom Blyth of The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.
What is the People We Meet on Vacation Movie Rating?
People We Meet on Vacation is not a closed-door romance so some scenes are for a more mature audience. However, it remains to be seen what the film adaptation will be rated.
When Will the People We Meet on Vacation Movie Be Released?
There is no current announcement of a release date for the People We Meet on Vacation movie.
However, with the screenplay already completed, we can keep our fingers crossed for an early 2025 release now that casting is underway.

People We Meet on Vacation is a standalone romance novel so there is no book sequel. Emily Henry has announced on her website that she has no plans at this point to write a sequel.
I wouldn’t be opposed, however, to someone writing a film sequel to continue Alex and Poppy’s relationship and travel adventures if the People We Meet on Vacation movie is a success.
