It’s always fun to discover which romance books to movie and TV shows are soon to be releasing because I’m in the camp where I love to see my favorite books come to life off the page.

Although fun might be stretching it when it comes to putting this list of romance books to movies every year because things are ALWAYS changing.

Throw in a world where production schedules are constantly changing and where movie theaters are no longer the norm for viewing and it definitely makes things interesting.

At least there is consistency in that books will continually be a perfect source for material for both movies and TV series.

The Popularity of Adapting Romance Books to Movies & TV Series

With the popular success of movies such as To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before and Me Before You as well as TV series such as Bridgerton and Virgin River, romance books to movies and TV shows is where it’s at.

I honestly only see the popularity increasing for this genre which I hope translates into many, many more romance book to movie or TV series to come in the future.

Who’s Filming Romance Book to Movies and TV Series?

Netflix

Netflix is on fire when it comes to producing movies and TV series based on beloved books.

This year you can also check out the Netflix Book Club which takes you behind the scenes and looks at how the platform brings your favorite books to the small screen.

Hosted by Uzo Aduba, she’ll sit down and chat with the stars and storytellers behind Netflix’s latest book-to-screen adaptations to discuss characters, themes, and the stories brought to life on the page and on screen.

Passionflix

Another big name in the romance book to movie space is Passionflix.

Passionflix is dedicated to bringing the best romance books to movies and TV series through their platform which should excited every romance book reader.

With so many favorite romance books optioned for movies, we can anticipated many more books to movies on Passionflix through 2022 and into the future.

HBO Max

HBO Max is also recognizing the popularity and success of transforming romance books into TV series, so I hope to see more from them as well.

Starz

Starz is not new to the game, given the success it’s seen with the Outlander TV series.

It already has more series in the works and I hope more to come.

AMC+

AMC+ has also seen success in adapting romance books to TV series.

It’s current series, A Discovery of Witches, ends this year so remains to be seen whether we’ll see more form this network.

Paramount+

Paramount+ is increasing its original series in 2022 including a romance book TV series adaptation.

Amazon Prime

Amazon Prime is capitalizing on the success of the To All the Boys I Loved Before movies based on the Jenny Han series.

It’s adapting another of her popular young adult romance series into a TV series this year.

Hallmark Movies & Mysteries

Hallmark Movies & Mysteries is doing what it does best and bringing romance to the small screen. One of its movies for 2022 is a romance book adaptation.

Peacock

Peacock is joining the ranks this year by bringing a popular, young adult romance book series to the small screen in a new TV series.

Disney+ and Hulu

Disney+ and Hulu are teaming up this fall to bring a movie adaptation of a romance book that gives different take on the classic romance tale of Romeo and Juliet!

365 Days: This Day

This Day

Release Date: April 27 on Netflix

Mr. Malcolm’s List

This will be a movie all Bridgerton fans will enjoy! I love the diverse cast for this Regency romance which is directed by Emma Holly Jones with the screenplay written by the author, Suzanne Allain. It releases in theaters on July 1, 2022.

Persuasion

Release Date: July 15, 2022 on Netflix

Anne Elliot is happily betrothed to a naval officer, Frederick Wentworth, but she precipitously breaks off the engagement when persuaded by her friend Lady Russell that such a match is unworthy.

The breakup produces in Anne a deep and long-lasting regret. When later Wentworth returns from sea a rich and successful captain, he finds Anne’s family on the brink of financial ruin and his own sister a tenant in Kellynch Hall, the Elliot estate. Will Anne and Wentworth be reunited in their love?

Persuasion began production in May 2021. It is a modern retelling, starring Dakota Johnson and made by Netflix and MRC Entertainment. This will be released on July 15.

Purple Hearts

Cassie Salazar and Luke Morrow couldn’t be more different. Sharp-witted Cassie works nights at a bar in Austin, Texas to make ends meet while pursuing her dream of becoming a singer/songwriter.

Luke is an Army trainee, about to ship out for duty, who finds comfort in the unswerving discipline of service. But a chance encounter at Cassie’s bar changes the course of both their lives.

Cassie is drowning in medical bills after being diagnosed with diabetes. When she runs into her old friend Frankie, now enlisted in the Army, she proposes a deal: she’ll marry him in exchange for better medical insurance and they can split the increased paycheck that comes with having a “family.”

When Frankie declines, Luke volunteers to marry Cassie instead. What she doesn’t know is that he has desperate reasons of his own to get married.

This movie stars Sofia Carson and Nicholas Galitzine (whom you can see in the upcoming book-to-movie adaptation of Red, White and Royal Blue!!)

Fun fact: Carson wrote and performed all of the original songs for the film.

Big Sky River

This is the fourth movie based on Anna Todd’s popular book series and will pick up where the cliffhanger left off in After We Fell which released in 2021.

It will hopefully answer the question whether Tessa and Hardin’s relationship will last. Watch it then make sure you’ve read all the After series books!

The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry

The film stars Golden Globe winner Emma Corrin (The Crown, My Policeman) as Constance Chatterley and Jack O’Connell (Godless, Unbroken) as Oliver Mellors. It’s becoming well-known on Netflix due to its provocative scenes.

Something From Tiffany’s

Filming wrapped in August 2021 for this romance book to movie adaptation so we should anticipate a 2022 release date. It casts Gabrielle Union in the starring role along with Keith Powers and Niecy Nash.

Aloha with Love

Romance Books to TV: Coming in 2022

Bridgerton, Season 2

The Viscount Who Loved Me

Release date: March 25, 2022 on Netflix

Anthony Bridgerton may have the reputation as a well-known rake among society, but he’s finally determined to marry and has already picked out his wife. Too bad his intended’s older sister Kate does not look favorably on the match.

This might be one of the most anticipated TV series of the year given the popularity of the first Bridgerton season in 2020. Filming for season two wrapped on November 21, 2021 and word just dropped that it will premiere on March 25, 2022 on Netflix.

Jonathan Bailey reprises his role as Anthony Bridgerton and Simone Ashley takes on the role of Kate.

Season 2 will feature eight episodes, but don’t fret because Netflix renewed Bridgerton for seasons 3 and 4 as of April 13, 2021. Executive producer Shonda Rhimes told Vanity Fair the series hopes to follow all eight children, including Hyacinth—when she’s old enough.

A Discovery of Witches Season 3

The Book of Life

In this conclusion to A Discovery of Witches and Shadow of Night, Diana and Matthew time-travel back from Elizabethan London to make a dramatic return to the present—facing new crises and old enemies.

At Matthew’s ancestral home, Sept-Tours, they reunite with the beloved cast of characters from A Discovery of Witches—with one significant exception. But the real threat to their future has yet to be revealed, and when it is, the search for Ashmole 782 and its missing pages takes on even more urgency.

This third season of A Discovery of Witches will be the final season of the TV show despite there being a fourth book in the series.

Outlander, Season 6

A Breath of Snow and Ashes

The Frasers are back home at Frasers Ridge but with new challenges. These challenges come mostly from the Christie family —Jamie’s old nemesis, Tom Christie, and his two children, Allan and Malva.

The release date of season 6 was announced on November 22, 2021, at the launch event for Diana Gabaldon’s ninth Outlander book Go Tell The Bees That I Am Gone. Check out the entire list of Outlander books in order!

Of note, this season will only have eight episodes. According to Outlander showrunner, Matthew B. Roberts, “Filming in 2021 has presented an unprecedented set of challenges which led us to the decision to truncate the season in order to bring the fans the most vibrant and dynamic season as soon as possible. Dinna fash, we will then film an extended season seven with 16 episodes next year as life returns to normalcy.”

Joining the cast this season are Mark Lewis Jones, Alexander Vlahos and Jessica Reynolds as the Christies.

Season one premiered in 2021 and only covered six of the 12 astrological signs, so you can assume that season two will cover the remaining 6.

This delightful TV series is in Italian and each episode is around 30 minutes long.

Heartstopper

This 4-part young adult, LGBTQ+ queer romance graphic novel is now a series on Netflix that explores love, friendship, loyalty, and mental illness. With initial reviews being off the charts, perhaps there is a chance for a season two!

Driven Season 3

Crashed

Sweet Magnolias Season 2

Sweet Magnolias season 2 wrapped filming in Georgia over the summer in late July 2021 and is scheduled to arrive on Netflix in 2022.

The show is based on the Sweet Magnolias book series that spans 11 books in total.

The Time Traveler’s Wife

Release Date: May 15, 2022 on HBO

Clare meets her future husband when she is six and Henry is thirty-six and yet the two marry when she is twenty-three and Henry is thirty-one. Henry is one of the first people diagnosed with Chrono-Displacement Disorder which causes his genetic clock to reset and misplace him in time.

This six-part TV series started filming in May 2021 with Rose Leslie and Theo James cast as the lead roles, Clare and Henry. The series premiere on HBO will be May 15, 2022.

Vampire Academy

Though a movie based on this series was made in 2014, you can now see this series come to life on the small screen in a TV series on Peacock.

Four episodes dropped on its release date, September 15, with new episodes to be released weekly, every Thursday. Season one will consist of ten, one-hour episodes.

The Empress

The Flatshare

Jessica Brown Findlay of Downton Abbey fame is cast as Tiffy while Anthony Welsh will play Leon.

Also joining the cast are The Witcher’s Bart Edwards who will play Tiffy’s ex-boyfriend Justin, and Gangs Of London’s Shaq B Grant, who will play Leon’s brother Richie.

Filming began on six-part series in the UK and premiered on December 1, 2022 in the UK, Australia and Canada. Hopefully the release date in the US will be in 2023.

Escaping Reality: The Secret Life of Amy Bensen

Daisy Jones & The Six

Also getting noticed is The Six, a band led by the brooding Billy Dunne.

On the eve of their first tour, his girlfriend Camila finds out she’s pregnant, and with the pressure of impending fatherhood and fame, Billy goes a little wild on the road.

Daisy and Billy cross paths when a producer realizes that the key to supercharged success is to put the two together. What happens next will become the stuff of legend.

The novel was optioned for a TV show before it was even released by Amazon Studios and Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine. Production wrapped in May 2022, but a premiere date has yet to be announced. 

This book to mini-series adaptation stars Riley Keough, Sam Claflin, and Suki Waterhouse. Word is that an album will accompany the show too!

Outlander Season 7

An Echo in the Bone

Starz announced that a season 7 of Outlander will happen with the top stars returning.

With season 6 releasing in 2022, the earliest we can hope for season 7, which will be based on the seventh book in the series An Echo in the Bone, is 2023.

Virgin River Season 5

Netflix announced in September 2021 that it not only renewed Virgin River for season 4 but for a season 5 as well. Production will begin in the summer of 2022. Who knows how long this series can continue given that there are 25 books in the Virgin River series!

Upcoming Bridgerton Season

An Offer From A Gentleman

While Season 3 and 4 of Bridgerton was announced in April 2021 by Netflix, it will not follow the order of the book series.

The third book in the Bridgerton series, An Offer From a Gentleman, which is one of my most favorite romance novels of all time, will have to wait for another season. Perhaps season 4 in 2024? We will have to see when Benedict’s story comes to life.

Bridgerton Season 3

Romancing Mister Bridgerton

Season 3 of Bridgerton, which was announced in April 2021 by Netflix, will actually be the 4th book in the Bridgerton series.

Anyone who loves Lady Whistledown is going to LOVE this season which is based on Julia Quinn’s book, Romancing Mister Bridgerton. Hopefully, we can anticipate season 3 in early 2023.
