Romance Book Recommendations Based On Romance Movies You Love to Watch
I am a self-professed romance book lover, but long before I became a voracious reader I was a romance movie lover.
If a romance movie was hitting the theaters, I was there to see it.
Don’t get me wrong, I still love romance movies, but more often than not most nights the TV is off because my nose is in a romance book.
Similar Themes Across Romance Movies & Books
Just as there are certain themes to a romance movie that I really adore, there are also certain themes to romance books that I can’t get enough of.
The similarities to these themes got me thinking. If I really liked a certain romance movie, what romance book did it remind me of?
Or, if I liked a certain movie, what romance book could I find that gave me a similar happily ever after love story?
One of my most favorite romantic comedies is Sweet Home Alabama.
Who doesn’t love Reese Witherspoon in this movie? Plus her chemistry with Josh Lucas was perfect!
The movie is one of the best second chance love stories in my opinion.
In the romance book world, there is no shortage of second chance romances.
It is one of the most popular romance book tropes so fans of this movie can find so many great books to read that remind them of Melanie Smooter and Jake Perry’s happily ever after.
Favorite Romance Tropes in Movies & Books
But romance movies offer so much more than second chance love stories, so the potential match up with romance books is endless.
In both the romance movie and book worlds, you’ve got:
- billionaire romances,
- matchmaker romances,
- single parent romances,
- fake relationship romances,
- bodyguard romances,
- age gap romances,
- office romances,
- marriage of convenience romances,
- surprise pregnancy romances, and the list goes on and on!
I’ve made it easy for you.
I have matched some of the most popular romance movies with a romance book that has a similar storyline.
There are probably many books that I could list per movie, but I picked out the best book with the most related plot that I know you will love reading.

Pretty Woman is THE movie about a girl down on her luck who gets picked out of obscurity by a wealthy businessman.
She may be a woman of the night but Vivian’s dream of being rescued by a knight on a white horse may just come true.
Skye Warren wrote a story with a similar plot line in her book Mating Theory.
Ashleigh is working the street corner when she meets billionaire Sutton who’s suffering from a broken heart.
This book reminded me of Pretty Woman from the very beginning and didn’t disappoint in giving a satisfying happy ending like the movie!
The Bodyguard had just the right amount of forbidden romance with intriguing suspense to make this one of the best, most popular romance movies.
Though hired to protect her, the bodyguard couldn’t help but fall for the R&B singer.
In Royally Endowed, Emma Chase gives us one equally devoted bodyguard who’s tasked with protecting a member of the royal family at all costs.
Logan has protected Ellie since she was a teen, only now she’s a college graduate ready to find love. He can’t get involved even though she’s the one he wants.
This was such a fun, forbidden romance where the tension between characters just oozes off the page.
You’re rooting for them to share their feelings and somehow find a way to make it work.
A perfect story for any fan of The Bodyguard.
Hitch is the perfect match making movie gone awry. Hitch is in business to help men woo the women of their dreams but he doesn’t anticipate falling for someone himself.
Rules of Engagement is about a matchmaker hired to find an arrogant and impatient pro football player a wife so that he can keep his job.
Her job is all but impossible given his endless antics and less than stellar attitude.
Maddie however has the patience of a saint and actually starts to coach Mason out of his ill-mannered ways, even if it often comes with some sarcasm on her part!
This was a great, opposites attract love story that will have you rooting for them to see that the perfect match is right in front of them.
How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days is a fun, hilarious movie that all hinges on what two people would do for their careers.
To score a new ad campaign, Ben must win a bet and get Andie to fall in love with him.
But Andie is determined to drive Ben away within ten days so she can get the magazine assignments she cares about.
In After the Kiss, Julie is a magazine columnist tasked with an assignment she’d rather not take.
She writes about flings not relationships but her latest assignment is to write about how to move from the one night stand to the long lasting relationship.
Mitchell is the perfect man to try a “relationship with commitment” for her article only Mitchell is ready to let loose and accepts a bet to have a fling with Julie.
This book was hilarious as these two try to achieve their “goals” while discovering that they may actually be great together despite appearing to have nothing in common.
A great book in a great series.
Silver Linings Playbook is a fantastic movie that looks at mental illness, family and love.
Jack has bipolar disorder and wants to win back his estranged wife. Tiffany, a widow also living with an unknown disorder, agrees to help him if he enters a dance competition with her.
Some Sort of Happy is a fantastic romance novel that looks at a different mental health condition: obsessive compulsive disorder.
Sebastian is a lawyer in his home town and he soon comes face to face with the girl he once had a crush on, Skylar. She doesn’t recognize her former classmate but is instantly attracted to him despite the quirks he tries hard to hide.
This is a wonderful book about two people who see themselves as flawed but who are loved unconditionally by the other. It’s one of the best romance novels of all time!
I just love marriage of convenience stories and Greencard and Roomies both deliver!
In Greencard, Bronte enters into a marriage of convenience with Georges, a Frenchman about to be deported, in order to score the perfect apartment.
When Immigration Services comes knocking, the two must move in together and quickly cram to learn as much as they can about the other to appear legit.
In Roomies, Holland agrees to marry Calvin, the street musician she’s secretly been crushing on, in order for him to legally stay in New York and perform in her uncle’s new Broadway show.
They too spend time learning more about each other so they can fool immigration into believing that their relationship is real.
I love when the lines between pretend and real love begin to blur in fake relationship romance books and this one is one of the best.
In The Proposal, Margaret is about to be deported back to Canada because her visa expired. But Andrew, her assistant, agrees to her proposition of a fake marriage in return for a promotion.
In Marriage of Inconvenience, Kat is in desperate need of a husband to keep her uncle from taking over her family’s billion-dollar company. Her only option is to ask Dan, the security guard from her friend’s company who she happens to crush on.
The chemistry between Kat and Dan make this a fantastic book and one of the best marriage of convenience stories.
In Raising Helen, Helen is a career gal living it up in the fashion world of Manhattan. Her life however is forever changed when her sister dies, leaving her the guardian of her two nieces and nephew.
Stepping up as a parent is hard but she gets some help from Dan, the kids’ principal.
Mariana Zapata pens a similar story in Wait for It.
Diana is now raising her two nephews after her brother and sister-in-law died. She doesn’t have time for a love life but that may change when a sexy, new neighbor moves into the neighborhood.
This is a fantastic slow burn romance making you relish each and every page.
If age gap romances are your jam then this pair is for you!
The movie, How Stella Got Her Groove Back is actually adapted from the book by Terry McMillan.
Stella is a 40-year-old stock broker and single parent to her young son. Convinced by her best friend to take a much needed vacation, she travels to Jamaica where she gets swept up in a romance with the 20-something islander, Winston.
In All Grown Up, Valentina is a 37-year-old divorcee whose best friend sets up a profile for her on a dating site for younger men without her knowledge and it unintentionally goes live.
On it, Valentina connects with 25 year-old Ford, who turns out to be her neighbor at her family’s summer home that she used to babysit.
Check this one out for a fun, age gap romance read.
In Sweet Home Alabama, Melanie up and leaves her honky tonk hometown to become a fashion designer in New York.
When she has to return home to save her engagement, she can’t help but remember the good times AND her high school sweetheart Jake.
Getting Schooled is a similar second chance romance only this one takes place at a school between teachers.
Callie has to move back home to help her parents and takes a job at her old high school where her former flame is a teacher and the head football coach.
Emma Chase is a favorite author of mine because of her great characters and fantastic dialogue so this is one to check out!

This movie and romance book are a match because they are both about a big man on campus falling for the girl who’s his complete opposite and the object of a bet.
In She’s All That, Zack takes a bet that he can turn any girl from school into a Prom Queen. Laney is the quiet, unpopular art student who becomes the focus of the bet.
In The Studying Hours, Sebastian is the wresting team captain at Iowa and better known as the douchebag on campus.
Studying at the library with his teammates he catches sight of Jameson, a fellow student dressed in a cardigan and pearls. Taking a bet, he approaches her but is soon surprised that she is not the stuffy, studious prude he pegged her for.
Sebastian lives up to his douchebag reputation more times than not but it’s also sweet to see how these two apparent opposites grow to care about and fall for each other.
Who doesn’t love the Cinderella story? We may not all need to be rescued but it sure is nice finding a Prince Charming!
Poor Cinderella lost her father and was left to the mercy and cruelty of her stepmother and stepsisters until the night she went to the ball and met her prince.
In Ache for You, Kimber is a boutique owner whose shop is destroyed by a fire, leaving her no choice but to go to Florence Italy to save her late father’s dress shop.
Hindering her efforts is her cold step-mother and her step-mother’s son who’s out to buy the dress shop from her.
This book is a perfect match if you are a fan of Cinderella. You won’t be disappointed!
Get ready to laugh out loud with this movie AND this book!
In Knocked Up, Alison is accidentally knocked up after a one-night stand with Ben. Once they find out the pregnancy news these two try and make it work despite being complete opposites.
Amy Daws is a favorite author of mine because she writes the most hilarious banter between her characters.
She brings that humor to One Moment Please in which Lynsey has a one-night stand with the arrogant and infuriating emergency doctor, Josh aka Dr. Dick. Only weeks later she finds herself in his ER where he tells her she’s pregnant – and it’s his baby.
This was a great, enemies to lovers story and surprise pregnancy romance book that gives the sweetest happily ever after.
This romance movie and romance book are a match because in both you get feisty lawyers ready to fight for something worth saving.
In Two Weeks Notice, Lucy is liberal lawyer who’s more concerned with taking pro bono cases and protecting causes near and dear to her than earning the big bucks.
And yet she decides to take the big paycheck offered by George when he agrees to save the Coney Island community center from being demolished.
In The Pecker Briefs, Viveka is the legal counsel for an animal rights group fighting the construction company set on destroying the natural habitat of the red-cockaded woodpecker for their latest project.
Ford takes on Viveka and it isn’t long before these two become more outside the courtroom.
I loved how the women in these two stories are confident lawyers with principles that they won’t compromise on for any man. Bennett’s books never disappoint and this one is a keeper.
Almost Famous isn’t technically a romance movie but I had to include it in the list because Drive is a fantastic book that fans of the movie will absolutely enjoy.
Almost Famous has many great characters but it revolves around the story of William, a fifteen year-old wannabe rock journalist who gets a gig with Rolling Stone magazine to write an article on the band, Stillwater.
Drive features Stella, a woman whose goal in life is to follow the music and write for the likes of Rolling Stone magazine.
As she’s embarking on her path to meet this goal, she ends up meeting two men – Reid, the musician and Nate the newspaper man. Which one does she choose?
Oh, get ready to have your heart strings pulled on with this romance book. It is one of my favorite Kate Stewart novels and one of the best romance novels of all time.
Jersey Girl features Ollie, a man who sadly finds himself a single father when his wife dies in childbirth. Shortly after, he loses his high powered public relations job and must move back in with his father to raise his daughter.
Forever and a Day also features a single dad. Scott is a busy ER doctor who’s trying to juggle his busy schedule, his kid and a dog but he’s completely overwhelmed.
Gracie ends up taking his dog walking job sparking a romance between the two.
This was a great romance between the two characters but also a great story about a man becoming a better father. A great book in a great series.
Fans of sports romance will love this match up!
In Just Wright, Leslie is a physical therapist who starts working with NBA star, Scott, to help him recover from his torn PCL which has put his career in jeopardy.
He also happens to start dating Leslie’s friend even though he has much more in common with Leslie.
A Favor For A Favor is a similar romance between a physical therapist and pro athlete. Stevie has had one heck of a day by the time she runs into grumpy NHL star Bishop in the hallway.
Despite his attitude, Stevie agrees to rehab Bishop’s groin injury in exchange for a favor of her own.
What ensues is a case of mistaken identities and wrong assumptions leading to a really sweet and funny enemies to lovers story. Hunting is the queen of hockey romance books and she delivers another great one in this book!
In Hope Floats, Birdee discovers that her husband has been unfaithful so she moves back to her home town and tries to connect with her estranged mother and be a single parent to her daughter.
Sylvia, in Unbreakable, is also a woman scorned. Her husband was cheating on her with a much younger woman who is now pregnant.
After her divorce, Sylvia packs up her two kids and moves back to her family’s farm where she connects with the farm’s winemaker, Henry, a fellow divorcee.
Like Birdee, Sylvia has to learn to trust her heart and love again while managing the feelings of her kids along the way. It’s a great book worth reading.
If you’re looking to get your fix of royal romance, then this match is right up your alley.
In Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, Mia discovers after her twenty-first birthday that she must marry within the month to be able to assume the role as Queen.
She picks a well bred suitor, however she can’t help but develop feelings for Nicholas, another heir to the throne who’s uncle is plotting to have him assume the role as King.
Emma Chase scores another great romance book in her Royally series with Royally Matched. Henry, the Prince of Wessco is next in line for the throne now that his older brother abdicated the role and he’s not happy about it.
He has no interest in the responsibility and ends up participating in a reality show where twenty women compete for his heart and his hand. Only it’s the quiet librarian in the corner who captures his eye and his heart.
The romance between Henry and Sarah completely stole my heart making this one of the best romance novels of all time to read.
In the movie Wedding Crashers, John and Jeremy are two divorce mediators who crash weddings to meet and hook up with women.
Beck and Rylee are the two wedding crashers in Quinn’s book, Two Wedding Crashers.
Rylee is desperate to rekindle her muse as she is a romance writer on a deadline with no ideas. Beck takes his buddy up on his invite to attend a wedding because he has an extra hotel room so why not travel to Key West?
This was a funny, sweet and moving romance book that will have you believing in fate.
In Runaway Bride Ike shares the story of Maggie, the runaway bride, without checking his facts. Desperate to save his job and get the correct story, Ike follows her around town as she prepares for another wedding.
Take A Chance on Me features runaway bride Maddie who skips out on her wedding to her high school sweetheart and finds herself in Mitchell’s bar with nothing but her wedding dress.
He’s inclined to help by offering her a place to stay but Maddie ends up helping him right back.
This is a great romance book about finding the one you’re meant to be with.
Sometimes what happens in Vegas really doesn’t stay in Vegas. In the movie, What Happens in Vegas, Joy and Jack meet in Vegas, party all night and wake up married!
The next morning they agree to divorce until Jack wins 3 million dollars at a slot machine. Although they both want the money, their only recourse is to attempt a relationship for 6 months to claim their share.
Sweet Filthy Boy, is also a marriage by mistake story. Mia meets and marries Frenchman, Ansel in Vegas one night and decides to follow him to Paris to see where things lead before going to graduate school in Boston.
This was a great book where the love and true relationship develop AFTER saying “I Do.”

Mary, in The Wedding Planner, is assigned to help Fran and her fiance Eddie plan their dream wedding. Only Eddie turns out to be the ER doctor Mary had fallen for.
In To Have and to Hold, Brooke is a new wedding planner in New York whose first client is Maya only it’s her brother takes an active role in the wedding planning.
Seth may have an ulterior motive for getting involved with his sister’s wedding but he didn’t anticipate his attraction for Brooke.
This is a fantastic book with just the right amount of animosity between characters fueling their chemistry.
I love this match because these are romances between office assistants. They each have a goal in mind but finding love wasn’t one of them!
Set It Up follows two office assistants who are overworked by their powerful, workaholic bosses. They devise a plan to set up their bosses only they end up spending more time with each other in the process.
In The Hating Game (which released as a movie in 2022!), both Lucy and Joshua are assistants whose days are filled with games of one-upmanship.
With a promotion up for grabs that only one will get the ante is upped and that’s when things get really interesting 🙂 This is such a good book that fans of office romances will adore.
Miss Congeniality is not really a romance movie but I’m letting it slide given the connection between Gracie and fellow agent Eric.
Gracie is an FBI agent who has to go undercover at the Miss United States beauty pageant to uncover a domestic attacker who’s threatened the event.
This movie was definitely more hilarious than romantic but it gives props to a female in a male-dominated world who saves the day.
If you’re a fan of smart women who save the day, then you’ll love Tabitha in Wicked Sexy.
Tabitha is an MIT drop out, super hacker with a photographic memory. She’s approached by Connor because he needs her skills to take down a cyber criminal.
This story is filled with suspense and major chemistry as these two are led in a game of cat and mouse to find the perpetrator.
I adored Tabitha who is such a strong female character. It’s a fantastic book and one of the best romance novels of all time.
So there you have it. Time to get a move on and either watch 25 movies or read 25 books to scratch that romance itch.

Any recommendations for books similar to the Goldie Hawn movie Overboard? And I don’t know if you’ve seen the movie Not SInce You, but I’ve been looking for similar romances for years if you know any?
Thank you!
How about a book similar to Before Sunrise? (Ethan Hawks, Julie Delpy)
Hi Jen- Great movie! I would recommend The Edge of Never by J.A. Redmerski which I think is somewhat similar to Before Sunrise. Two people meet on a greyhound bus and end up falling for each other as they travel. It’s a favorite of mine.
Omg yes I would love a book that’s like Mr Right w Anna Kendrick!
