Every year I scour the internet to determine which romance books to movies and TV shows are coming to the big and small screen.

If you like seeing your favorite romance books adapted to movies and TV series then check out what you have to look forward to watching in 2023 with this book list!

Books have always been great sources of entertainment all on their own, but they are also the best material for movies and TV series.

I for one love when studios and networks adapt romance books to movies and TV series so that I can see my favorite stories and characters come “to life” when I’ve previously only imagined them in my mind.

When it comes to popular movies and TV shows, producers aren’t blind.

They’ve seen the response and popularity of movies like Crazy Rich Asians and The Hating Game to realize that romance books are where it’s at.

I’m actually more partial to romance books to TV series because it’s so hard to capture everything from a book in just a two-hour movie.

With a TV series you can pull in all the details and iconic moments from a book or series and see it play out in all its glory.

And that’s another reason why I like to put these lists together – so that readers can know what’s coming so they can read the book first if they choose to!

Netflix is returning with new seasons of its popular TV series as well as new movies.

Amazon Prime Video

Prime Video is giving Netflix a run for its money and has many romance book based movies on its slate for 2023.

Passionflix

Another producer that is a constant in the romance book-to-movie space is Passionflix.

Passionflix is dedicated to bringing the best romance books to movies and TV series through its platform.

This is my most anticipated romance book to movie of the year! I absolutely adore Nicholas Galitzine and cannot wait to see him bring the role of Prince Henry to life.

Red, White and Royal Blue is one of my all-time favorite romance novels and this movie is going to be epic!

Cast includes Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Henry (who recently starred in the romance book to movie adaptation of Purple Hearts), Taylor Zakhar Perez as Alex Claremont-Diaz, Uma Thurman as Ellen Claremont, and Sarah Shahi (known for her role in the romance book to TV series based on BB Easton’s 44 Chapters About 4 Men).

One True Loves

Release Date: April 7, 2023 in Select Theaters, April 14 on Apple TV

That is, until Jesse is found. He’s alive, and he’s been trying all these years to come home to her.

With a husband and a fiancé, Emma has to now figure out who she is and what she wants, while trying to protect the ones she loves.

Production for this popular Taylor Jenkins Reid book wrapped in January 2023 so hopefully the April 2023 date is set for its release! Taylor Jenkins Reid and her husband are the screenwriters for the film so you know it’s going to be good.

The movie stars Sam Heughan as Rob Burns and Priyanka Chopra Jonas as Mira Ray and Celine Dion as herself. Word is that Celine Dion even recorded a new song for the film!

A German version of this film was released in 2016 but this is an English remake that was filmed in London.

Through My Window: Across the Sea

This movie is the second installment in the Through My Window movie series. The first movie, Through My Window released in 2022, and this new movie releases in 2023 with the third installment to come in 2024.

This movie is a Spanish film so entirely done in Spanish and it’s rated TV-MA.

Happiness for Beginners

This is the second book to movie adaptation for Katherine Center and Vicky Wight. Wight wrote the script and directed Happiness for Beginners which features Ellie Kemper and Luke Grimes.

Love at First Sight
Based on the Book: The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight

Release Date: September 15, 2023 on Netflix

Today should be one of the worst days of Hadley Sullivan’s life. Having just missed her flight, she’s stuck at the airport and late to her father’s wedding, which is taking place in London and involves a soon-to-be stepmother Hadley’s never even met.

Then she happens upon the perfect boy in the airport’s cramped waiting area. His name is Oliver, he’s British, and he’s sitting in her row….

A long night on the plane passes in the blink of an eye, and Hadley and Oliver lose track of each other in the airport chaos upon arrival.

Can fate intervene to bring them together once more?

I’m super psyched that Rob Delaney is starring in it as well as SAG Awards winner Haley Lu Richardson and SAG Awards nominee Ben Hardy.

This movie looks super cute about finding love in 24 hours, and I cannot wait to watch it!

The Idea of You
by Robinne Lee

Status: Currently Filming

Release Date: Sometime in 2023 on Amazon Prime Video

Solène Marchand, the thirty-nine-year-old owner of an art gallery in Los Angeles, is reluctant to take her daughter, Isabelle, to meet her favorite boy band.

But since her divorce, she’s more eager than ever to be close to Isabelle.

The last thing Solène expects is to make a connection with one of the members of the world-famous boy band August Moon.

But Hayes Campbell is clever, winning, confident, and posh, and the attraction is immediate. That he is all of twenty years old further complicates things.

Fans of age gap romance have devoured this rock star romance between divorcee and boy band star.

Casting for this book to movie includes Anne Hathaway as Sophie, Nickolas Galitzine as Hayes, and Reid Scott as Dan. Robinne Lee is one of the writers of the film and Michael Showalter is directing.

Before

Status: Filming wrapped in 2022

Release Date: Anticipated September 2023 on Amazon Prime Video

Before Hardin met Tessa he was a raging storm. During those first moments they met, he realized he needed to keep her for himself—his life depended on it. After they got together, the world would never be the same.

Hardin and Tessa’s dramatic love affair became a vortex pulling in everyone around them.

For the first time these others are given voice as they appear before, during, and after the events in original After novels.

Alongside them, Hardin’s account of his first encounters with Tessa—which will change what you thought you knew about the brooding boy and the angel who loved him.

This finale to the After movie series will be titled After Everything.

This romance book to movie adaptation is based on the prequel novel, Before, where we learn more about Hardin before he met Tessa.

Filming has wrapped on this movie however no news has been shared regarding a release date but you can anticipate a possible 2023 release.    

Cast so far includes Hero Fiennes Tiffin as Hardin and Jessica Webber as Maddy.

A Cuban Girl’s Guide to Tea and Tomorrow

Release Date: Anticipated 2023 in Theaters

Production of this romance book to movie began in 2022 in Yorkshire, England.

This Latinx young adult romance was also the November 2020 pick for Reese Witherspoon’s Young Adult Book Club.

Casting includes Kit Connor (of Heartstopper, the romance graphic novel to TV series) as Orion Maxwell and Maia Reficco (of Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin fame) as Lila Reyes.

Beautiful Disaster

Release Date: April 12, 2023 in Theaters

Filming for this movie actually completed in December 2021 in Bulgaria so it’s been a long time coming for this movie premiere which is now set for April 12, 2023!

The Perfect Find

Filming wrapped in August 2021 for this romance book to movie adaptation and we finally get to watch the movie on Netflix starting June 23. Its cast includes Gabrielle Union in the starring role along with Keith Powers and Niecy Nash.

Additional cast members include Gina Torres, Aisha Hinds and Devalle Ellis.

Wait With Me

Release Date: March 30, 2023 on Passionflix

The origin story of this romance novel is fantastic as Daws began squatting in a Tires, Tires, Tires shop while trying to overcome her writer’s block and the subject of this story just flowed out of her in 13 days!

Romance Books to TV Series Coming in 2023

Daisy Jones & The Six
by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Release Date: March 3, 2023 on Amazon Prime Video

Daisy is a girl coming of age in L.A. in the late sixties, sneaking into clubs on the Sunset Strip, sleeping with rock stars, and dreaming of singing at the Whisky a Go Go.

By the time she’s twenty, her voice is getting noticed, and she has the kind of heedless beauty that makes people do crazy things.

Also getting noticed is The Six, a band led by the brooding Billy Dunne.

On the eve of their first tour, his girlfriend Camila finds out she’s pregnant, and with the pressure of impending fatherhood and fame, Billy goes a little wild on the road.

Daisy and Billy cross paths when a producer realizes that the key to supercharged success is to put the two together. What happens next will become the stuff of legend.

The novel was optioned for a TV show before it was even released by Amazon Studios and Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine. Filming began in late September 2021 and wrapped in May 2022. 

Get excited for its release on March 3, 2023 on Amazon Prime Video.

This book to TV series adaptation stars Riley Keough, Sam Claflin, and Suki Waterhouse. Word is that an album will accompany the show too!

Queen Charlotte
by Julia Quinn and Shonda Rhimes

Release Date: May 4, 2023 on Netflix

The Bridgerton TV series has inspired a new book and a new spin-off TV series, Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, that will air on Netflix on May 4, 2023.

Julia Quinn and Shonda Rhimes teamed up to write Queen Charlotte, a prequel exploring the character’s backstory. The book with coincide with the TV series and will release on May 9, 2023.

An Echo in the Bone

Release Date: June 16, 2023 on Starz

Jamie Fraser is already certain that the Americans will win the rebellion, but he has no wish to face his illegitimate son—a young lieutenant in the British army—across the battlefield.

Claire Randall knows that the Americans will win, too, but not what the ultimate price may be. That price won’t include Jamie’s life or his happiness, though—not if she has anything to say about it.

Meanwhile, in the relative safety of the twentieth century, Jamie and Claire’s daughter, Brianna, and her husband, Roger MacKenzie, have resettled in a historic Scottish home where Brianna’s parents’ story comes to life through Claire’s letters.

Starz announced in March 2021 that a season 7 of Outlander, which will be based on the seventh book in the series An Echo in the Bone, would happen with the top stars returning. Filming began in the summer of 2022 and the release of the new season will be June 16.

Due to the pandemic, Outlander‘s sixth season had to be shortened. However, to make up for this “droughtlander,” Starz announced that season seven would be extended with a total of sixteen episodes.

Caitriona Balfe (Claire Randall Fraser), Sam Heughan (Jamie Fraser), Sophie Skelton (Brianna Randall), and Richard Rankin (Roger Wakefield) are all set to reprise their roles.

Joining them are Izzy Meikle-Small (Snow White and the Huntsman) and Joey Phillips (Billy Elliot) as Rachel Hunter and Dr. Denzell Hunter.

Virgin River Season 5

Virgin River

Release Date: September 7, 2023 on Netflix

The popular Virgin River TV series continues into 2023 about Robyn Carr’s series of books. Netflix announced in September 2021 that it not only renewed Virgin River for season 4 but for season 5 as well.

In May of 2023, it was announced that Virgin River was renewed for a sixth season!

Who knows how long this series can continue given that there are 25 books in the Virgin River series!

The fifth season of Virgin River is filmed in British Columbia, Canada, through mid-November 2022 and is expected to release on Netflix on September 7, 2023.

Like season 4, season 5 is expected to be an expanded 12-episode season.

The new showrunner, writers, and directors also plan to bring more LGBTQ+ stories to create more inclusivity in the show this season.

Sullivan’s Crossing

What We Find

Release Date: March 19, 2023 on CTV and Crave

Neurosurgeon Maggie Sullivan decides she needs to slow down before she burns out completely so she heads to Sullivan’s Crossing for a simpler way of life.

But Maggie’s world is rocked and she must take responsibility for the Crossing with the help of a quiet and serious-looking hiker, Cal Jones.

Filming for this TV series began in the summer of 2022 in Nova Scotia Canada with the same team behind the hit series, Virgin River.

Casting for this romance book series to TV series includes Morgan Kohan as Maggie, Chad Michael Murray as Cal, and Scott Patterson as Sully.

Sweet Magnolias Season 3

Welcome to Serenity

Release Date: July 20, 2023 on Netflix

The Sweet Magnolias TV series continues for another season based on Sheryl Woods’ Sweet Magnolias book series.

Season three for Sweet Magnolias officially renewed in May 2022. Filming began in the summer of 2022 and completed on October 21, 2022.

Fans of this romance book to TV series will be excited to hear that season 3 will be 10 episodes long.

Heartstopper Season 2

Heartstopper

Release Date: August 3, 2023 on Netflix

The LGBTQ+ positive TV show was renewed by Netflix for two more seasons in May 2022.

Production on season 2 began in September 2022 and ended in December 2022. I’m excited to announce that it will release on August 3, 2023.

Author, Alice Oseman, has said that the romance graphic novel series would need four seasons to cover the full story of Nick and Charlie so here’s hoping more are to come.

Shadow and Bone Season 2

Siege and Storm and Six of Crows

Release Date: March 16, 2023 on Netflix

Shadow and Bone season 2 is expected to adapt two of Bardugo’s books in the Grishaverse: Siege and Storm and Six of Crows.

Siege and Storm is the second book in The Shadow and Bone trilogy which focuses on Alina’s story after her escape from The Darkling.

Six of Crows is the first book in The Six of Crows duology which features Kaz, Inej, Jesper, Wylan, Nina and Matthias as they embark on a heist of the impenetrable Ice Court.

The first season debuted in 2021 with 8 episodes. You can anticipate the 8 episodes of season two which will release on March 16, 2023.

Filming for the second season in Budapest ended in July 2022 so fans are eagerly awaiting its release.

The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 2

It’s Not Summer Without You
by Jenny Han

Release Date: July 13, 2023 on Amazon Prime Video

It used to be that Belly counted the days until summer, until she was back at Cousins Beach with Conrad and Jeremiah.

But not this year. Not after Susannah got sick again and Conrad stopped caring.

When Jeremiah calls saying Conrad has disappeared, Belly knows what she must do to make things right again.

And it can only happen back at the beach house, the three of them together, the way things used to be.

If this summer really and truly is the last summer, it should end the way it started—at Cousins Beach.

Season 2 for The Summer I Turned Pretty was already announced before season one even released. Filming began in July 2022, and the release date will be July 13, 2023.

On July 13, the first three episodes will drop at once. New episodes will drop every Friday until the season finale on August 18. 

The second season will be based on the second book in The Summer I Turned Pretty book series, It’s Not Summer Without You, and since there are three books in the series, I bet we will see a third season in 2024.

Author Jenny Han is also returning as a showrunner and writer for the second season.

The Flatshare

Release Date in the US: Sometime in 2023 on Paramount+

Tiffy Moore needs a cheap flat, and fast. Leon Twomey works nights and needs cash. Their friends think they’re crazy, but it’s the perfect solution: Leon occupies the one-bed flat while Tiffy’s at work in the day, and she has the run of the place the rest of the time.

But with obsessive ex-boyfriends, demanding clients at work, wrongly imprisoned brothers and, of course, the fact that they still haven’t met yet, they’re about to discover that if you want the perfect home you need to throw the rulebook out the window.

Jessica Brown Findlay of Downton Abbey fame is cast as Tiffy while Anthony Welsh will play Leon.

Also joining the cast are The Witcher’s Bart Edwards who will play Tiffy’s ex-boyfriend Justin, and Gangs Of London’s Shaq B Grant, who will play Leon’s brother Richie.

This six-part TV series released on Paramount+ in the UK, Australia, and Canada on December 1, 2022. Hopefully, we will see a wider US release date in 2023.

Season 3 of Gabriel’s Redemption began filming in the fall of 2022 on location in Oxford and in Italy.

There is a fourth book in the Gabriel’s Inferno series, so we will see if a fourth season will be in the works after season 3. Watch on Passionflix.

Passionflix is again taking a loved romance book series and making it a TV series on its network. The first season debuted on December 22, 2022 on Passionflix but with four books in The Secret Life of Amy Bensen series, we may see season two drop in 2023!

Cast for this romance book-to-TV series adaptation includes Maddie McCormick as Amy Benson and Casey King as the reclusive billionaire Liam Stone.
