I admit that I love romance book to movie adaptations and romance book to TV series so I absolutely LOVE to put together an annual list of romance books being made into movies and TV shows each year.

Of course, this year making this type of list is not so easy.
Some movies that were slated to start production in 2020 were obviously delayed and it remains to be seen where other book adaptations stand with their timelines.
That being said there are a few books to movies with actual release dates or anticipated releases for 2021 that we can look forward to!
Who’s Filming Romance Book to Movies or TV Series?
Passionflix
Passionflix is one production company that has re-opened and re-started filming in the later part of 2020.
Passionflix is a “premium streaming service offering original movies, series and shorts, adapted from bestselling romance novels, along with an impressive library of your all-time favorite romance classics.”
Since 2017, Passionflix has produced 11 movies, series and shorts with their latest release being Gabriel’s Inferno, adapted from the novel by Sylvain Reynard, which released in May 2020 with its third installment released in November 2020.
They also released 5 Holiday Quickies, short films less than 20 minutes, in December 2020 before beginning their 2021 lineup.

Netflix
Netflix has some romance book to movies in its lineup for 2021 as well as some romance book to TV series.
But before you watch their 2021 lineup you can check out their last minute 2020 release.
The Bridgerton series, adapted by Shonda Rhimes based on the series by beloved author Julia Quinn, debuted on December 25, 2020.
If you missed this release at the end of 2020, you have to check it out in 2021! It’s the streaming service’s biggest series EVER.

There You’ll Find Me

This coming-of-age drama will release on May 14 in theaters.
This is a young adult romance that finds 18 year old Finley Sinclair struggling with her grief over the loss of her older brother. Wanting to feel closer to him, she decides to enroll in an exchange program in Ireland- a place where he loved to travel.
On the plane she meets Beckett Rush, a Hollywood teen heartthrob who convinces her to be his assistant while he shows her around Ireland.

Always and Forever, Lara Jean

The highly anticipated, third and final book to movie adaptation in the To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before series released in February on Netflix.
Lara Jean is having a fantastic senior year, with so much still to look forward to such as prom, class trip to NYC and beach week. But when some unexpected news arrives, she has to rethink her plans and it’s a question of whether she follows her head or her heart.

Felicity Jones and Shailene Woodley lead the cast in this movie which is now scheduled to release on July 23, 2021.
Jojo Moyes brings a double romantic tale that spans 40 years. In 1960 Jennifer Stirling wakes up in the hospital, but can’t remember anything-not the tragic car accident that put her there, not her husband, nor receiving the letter, signed simply “B”, asking her to leave her husband.
In 2003, a journalist named Ellie discovers the same and becomes obsessed with uncovering how this story ended in the hopes that it can resurrect her faltering career. Ellie’s search will rewrite history and help her see the truth about her own modern romance.

Filming for this Passionflix movie began in October 2020 and it finally debuted on May 27, 2021.

The second season of A Discovery of Witches debuted on January 8, 2021 which is available for viewing on AMC+ and Sky One.
A third and final season which began in late 2020 has wrapped and is expected to release at the end of 2021 or early 2022.
At Oxford’s Bodleian Library, young scholar Diana Bishop unwittingly calls up a bewitched alchemical manuscript in the course of her research. She’s a descendent of an old and distinguished line of witches, yet Diana wants nothing to do with sorcery.
Her discovery however, sets a fantastical underworld stirring, and a horde of daemons, witches, and vampires soon descends upon the library looking to Diana as the only creature who can break a spell.

Season 2 In Production: Release Pushed to 2022 on Netflix
Netflix announced in February 2021 that a Season 2 of Bridgerton is coming. Filming wrapped on November 21, 2021 so the season looks to now release in 2022.
This season will focus on the love interest of Anthony Bridgerton, the eldest brother and will be adapted from Julia Quinn’s book, The Viscount Who Loved Me.
Jonathan Bailey will reprise his role as Anthony Bridgerton and Simone Ashley has been cast for the role of Kate.
Anthony Bridgerton may have the reputation as a well-known rake among society, but he’s finally determined to marry and has already picked out his wife. Too bad his intended’s older sister does not look favorably on the match.

A Breath of Snow and Ashes

Season 6 Release Date: Pushed to 2022 on Starz
Filming of season 6 of Outlander wrapped in 2021 with the season premiere finally announced to be March 6, 2022. Check out the entire list of Outlander books in order to see what might be next!

Season 3 Release Date: July 9, 2021 on Netflix
Season 2 of Virgin River aired on November 27, 2020 with the show also receiving a renewal for a third season. Season 3 finally dropped on July 9, 2021 and saw a renewal for seasons 4 and 5. Check out the entire Virgin River book series and book order!

Season 7 Coming to Starz
Starz announced that a season 7 of Outlander will happen with the top stars returning.
With season 6 now releasing in early 2022, the earliest we can hope for season 7, which will be based on the seventh book in the series An Echo in the Bone, is 2023.
Jamie and Claire Fraser are certain of who will win the American rebellion, they just don’t the price they will have to pay.

Stealing Home

Second Season Confirmed by Netflix
The Sweet Magnolias book series was made into a TV series, Sweet Magnolias, by Netflix with the first season premiering May 19, 2020.
In July 2020 the series was renewed for a second season but there is no news regarding filming or a release date.
Maddie Townsend’s life is overturned when her husband leaves her for a younger woman, leaving her three children heartbroken in the process.
When her son’s anger issues begin to affect his love of baseball Maddie steps in to help, meeting his coach Cal Maddox. She soon learns Cal has feelings for her but a relationship could ruin their reputations and careers.

The Time Traveler’s Wife

In production for HBO: Expected Release 2022
HBO is currently adapting The Time Traveler’s Wife into a TV series. Rose Leslie and Theo James have been cast in the lead roles as Clare and Henry with the series currently in pre-production.
The series is anticipated to premiere on HBO and HBO Max some time in 2022.
Clare meets her future husband when she is six and Henry is thirty-six and yet the two marry when she is twenty-three and Henry is thirty-one. Henry is one of the first people diagnosed with Chrono-Displacement Disorder which causes his genetic clock to reset and misplace him in time.

Intercepted
by Alexa Martin

Starz is adding another romance book based TV series to its line up with Martin’s Intercepted. Casting has started but there is no word yet on production or an anticipated release date.
Marlee Harper vowed to never date an athlete again when her NFL-star boyfriend is found cheating. Only Gavin Pope, the new quarterback and man from her past, is ready to show Marlee that he’s nothing like her ex.
She may be willing to give Gavin a chance but it’s the teams wives she’ll have to contend with when they only want to take her down.

A Court of Thorn and Roses

Hulu will be bringing a TV series adaptation of the bestselling books by Maas, starting with A Court of Thorn and Roses, though no production or release dates are known at this time.
Maas is currently writing the series with Ron Moore, who famously adapted the Outlander book series for TV.

The Hating Game

Lucy Hale and Austin Stowell (who replaced Robbie Amell) play the leads in this film.
Lucy and Joshua share an office and take the need to outdo each other to a whole new level.
But when a promotion comes up that only one of them will get, it takes their office antics to new heights.

The remaining two books in the Crazy Rich Asians triology are slated to become movies following the hit movie of the first book, Crazy Rich Asians.
Production was to begin in 2020 but cast availability and other issues have delayed filming both China Rich Girlfriend and Rich People Problems which are supposed to be filmed be back to back.
China Rich Girlfriend continues the story of what happens when Rachel Chu, engaged to marry Asia’s most eligible bachelor, discovers her birthfather.

Rebekah Weatherspoon’s Cowboys of California Trilogy has been optioned for TV by writer/producer, Valerie C. Woods and her MCV Productions.
Plans are already in motion for adapting the first book, A Cowboy to Remember.
At an office party, Evie Buchanan takes a fall which lands her in the hospital with no memory of who she is. Her close friends who run the luxury dude ranch in California where Evie grew up are called in to help her retrieve her memories, including former rodeo champion Zach Pleasant.

The best part is that the authors, Christina Lauren, are set to write the script.
No word on casting, production or anticipated release date as of yet.
Holland Bakker has developed a crush on the guitarist who busks for cash in the subway station near her apartment in New York City. When Calvin Mcloughlin rescues her from a drunken attacker one night, Holland is determined to pay him back by arranging an audition with her uncle for the hottest Broadway show.
