With the wild success of Fourth Wing and the Fourth Wing series, there’s been no shortage of romantasy books in 2024 to fill the void while we wait for Onyx Storm. If January can’t come fast enough for you, check out the latest romantasy books dropping this fall that all fantasy romance fans must add to their reading list.
I have a feeling several of these will become nominees in the 2024 Goodreads Choice Awards for Best Romantasy.

New Romantasy Books to Read this Fall 2024
The Games Gods Play
by Abigail Owen
The gods love to play with us mere mortals. And every hundred years, we let them…
I have never been favored by the gods. Far from it, thanks to Zeus. Living as a cursed office clerk for the Order of Thieves, I just keep my head down and hope the capricious beings who rule from Olympus won’t notice me. Not an easy feat, given San Francisco is Zeus’ patron city, but I make do. I survive. Until the night I tangle with a different god. The worst god. Hades.
For the first time ever, the ruthless, mercurial King of the Underworld has entered the Crucible—the deadly contest the gods hold to determine a new ruler to sit on the throne of Olympus. But instead of fighting their own battles, the gods name mortals to compete in their stead.
So why in the Underworld did Hades choose me—a sarcastic nobody with a curse on her shoulders—as his champion? And why does my heart trip every time he says I’m his?
I don’t know if I’m a pawn, bait, or something else entirely to this dangerously tempting god. How can I, when he has more secrets than stars in the sky? Because Hades is playing by his own rules…and Death will win at any cost.
This is hands down one of the best romance books of 2024! If you love romantasy, you cannot miss this epic romance that will have you hooked from the very first page.
Owen weaves this epic tale of a cursed thief who falls for Hades while trying to survive competitions against other mortals. It’s a must read if you love Greek mythology, the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, The Hunger Games or Fourth Wing.
I personally loved that it’s a complete story though does end in a way that will have you counting down to book two.

Throne of Secrets
by Kerri Maniscalco
Gabriel Axton—infamous as the Prince of Gluttony, the self-proclaimed rake of rakes—has always lived for indulgence: in delicious food, in tantalizing women, and most of all, in the thrill of the hunt, where his love of danger can take over.
But when his favorite adventure takes a dangerous turn, he realizes something is very wrong in his demon court. With the clock ticking, he must turn to the only one who might uncover the truth: a journalist he has spent a decade avoiding…
Adriana Saint Lucent has been on the hunt for years—if she could just report something damning enough about that no-good scoundrel Gabriel Axton, she knows others would finally see the demon as she does. But she never expected to turn up a rumor too terrifying to be believed: could the ice dragons to the north be growing restless? Drawn into the secrets of the Underworld, Adriana’s investigation leads her into the place she dreads most…Axton’s infamous court.
To stop darkness from falling over their kingdom, Axton and Adriana will have to unite against an escalating danger. But with each holding tight to their own secrets, can they find the truth before it’s too late? And what will they do with an equally troubling rumor: that they might not actually hate one another, after all?
OMG, I’m so ready for Maniscalco’s latest prince and the fact that it’s Gluttony is just too good for words. I devoured the first book in this series, Throne of the Fallen but I think you’ll be able to dive right into this one even if you haven’t read the Prince of Sin’s story first.
And did she allude to dragons?! Yeah, I cannot pass up a new romantasy book with dragons and neither should you. Check out this new steamy read this fall!
The Songbird and the Heart of Stone
by Carissa Broadbent
Mische lost everything when she was forcibly Turned into a vampire–her home, her humanity, and most devastating of all, the love of the sun god to whom she had devoted her life. Now, sentenced to death for murdering the vampire prince who Turned her, redemption feels impossible.
But when Mische is saved by Asar, the bastard prince of the House of Shadow with a past as brutal as his scars, she’s forced into a mission worse than execution: a journey to the underworld to resurrect the god of death himself.
Yet, Mische’s punishment may be the key to her salvation. In a secret meeting, her sun god commands her to help Asar in his mission, only to betray him… by ending the god of death.
Mische and Asar must travel the treacherous path to the underworld, facing trials, beasts, and the vengeful ghosts of their pasts. But most dangerous of all is the alluring call of the darkness–and her forbidden attraction to Asar, a burgeoning bond that risks invoking the wrath of gods.
As her betrayal looms, the underworld closes in and angry gods grow restless. Mische will be forced to choose between the redemption of the sun or the damnation of the darkness.
Fans of Broadbent’s Crown of Nyaxia series will definitely want to check out this new epic fantasy romance of love and treachery between mortals and gods. It follows the duology of the previous books so can be read as a standalone if you love vampire romance books, fantasy and a romantasy that is a cross between A Court of Thorns and Roses and Dante’s Inferno. Do you really need a reason more than that?
From Blood and Ash
by Jennifer L. Armentrout
While Sera is finally free of Kolis and back with those she loves, not everything is calm. Memories of all she’s endured still haunt her, but Sera finally has hope for a future with the other half of her heart and soul. Nyktos desires, loves, and accepts every part of her—even the monstrous bits she still battles.
More than ever, Sera and Ash have everything under the realms to fight for, and Nyktos has no doubt Sera is fit to be the Queen of the Gods. But she must find that faith within herself if they hope to convince the other Courts to support them against Kolis and make Iliseeum and the mortal realm better, safer places for all.
But as Sera begins to piece together the importance of her bloodline and the true meaning behind the foreboding prophecy, it becomes clear that everything that has happened and is yet to come is much bigger than Kolis and his dark obsessions.
They cannot help but wonder exactly how much influence the Fates have had and what their ultimate goal is. What Sera does know for sure is that they can trust very few—including her.
A battle between the gods is brewing, and heartbreaking losses are imminent with the true Primal of Death strengthening. With a family of the heart willing to battle by their side, can Sera and Nyktos stop Kolis before he destroys the realms, or will it all disappear in a fiery inferno of blood and ash?
I cannot believe we are already at the end of Armentrout’s amazing Flesh and Fire Series, but alas it’s here!I admit that I’m still a book behind but this new romantasy is providing the impetus to catch up so I can enjoy the series finale.
This book and series is a must-read for anyone who’s fallen in love with Armentrout’s Blood and Ash series (that would be me!). With over 700 pages, it’s going to pack quite an ending.
Never Keep
by Caroline Peckham and Susanne Valenti
The dragons are lost. The elements are at war. Enlisting isn’t optional. And I’m falling for a man who wants me dead.
I’m a wielder of hearts and summoner of corruption. Heir to nothing and born to a fool in the wrong damn month. But I’m also one of only two Fae in this divided land of hellions who might be starting to see through the lies we’ve swallowed for so long.
In the year we turn twenty-one, conscripts from across the warring nations of air, fire, earth and water are sent to Never Keep – the only place in our besieged continent where our magic can be Awakened.
But something is wrong inside Never Keep. Something which might extend far beyond the reaches of this desolate fortress. Within the gothic walls of this frigid castle in the snow, we’re left to hold our own against the brutal Fae from the opposing lands.
The Reapers are merciless. The Royals are lying. The Werewolves run rampant and Vampires roam the wastelands in bloodthirsty covens. But even though death lurks in every shadow of the Keep, it’s the least of my worries.
I’m delving into secrets the stars don’t want me uncovering, making alliances with Fae born to be my enemy, falling for a sinner while promising my heart to a different heathen and somewhere amid it all, I’m supposed to win a war.
I thought the only thing I had to do was survive my magical instruction. Turns out, fate doesn’t favour the wicked.
Oh lordy, if this book summary doesn’t entice you to read this new romantasy of 2024 I don’t know what will. Caroline Peckham and Susanne Valenti have penned a new, enemies to lovers romantasy series set in the same world as their popular Zodiac Academy series, but it can be read as a standalone.
Interested in twisted Fae, elements battling one another and a story that will leave your heart raw and bloody? Be sure to add this new romantasy to your TBR list this fall.
The Bastard King
by Donna Grant
I am fire and death. My very presence brings terror and panic. For most, I am the last thing they will ever see. For there is only one thing I live for — freeing my kin. Every action, every battle brings me a step closer. Nothing distracts me from my purpose.
Until she crosses my path. Brave and fearless, she holds me utterly enthralled. I have to know her. Her past and her future. But especially the secrets she keeps closely guarded.
One taste of her lips, and I’m caught. Trapped. Seized. The more I’m with her, the harder it is to leave. But I have sworn allegiance to another who promises to free the dragons.
Her or my kin. It was once an easy choice. Before my heart got involved.
Donna Grant is bringing us romantasy lovers a new book to devour that has dragons and I’m all for it. I especially love fantasy book where the strong hero is brought to his knees by the heroine who captures his reluctant heart. I’m hoping this is a keeper!
A Tribute of Fire
by Sariah Wilson
Lia is the princess of Locris, a dying desert nation cursed centuries ago by an earth goddess—one still worshipped by the thriving and adversarial nation of Ilion. Every year, Ilion offers the goddess a sacrifice: two Locrian maidens forced to compete in a life-and-death race to reach her temple. In a millennium, no maiden has made it out of Ilion alive. This year, Lia is one of the hunted.
An education in battle gives her a fighting chance, but the challenges are greater than she feared: Lia’s beloved but untrained sister Quynh has been put in the path of danger. The winding streets of Ilion itself have been transformed into a labyrinthine maze of countless choices and dead ends. And if the risks weren’t significant enough, Lia is reluctantly drawn to the commandingly attractive Jason, an Ilionian sailor she loathes to trust and desires like no man before.
The tribute game is on. It’s up to Lia to lift the goddess’s curse, restore Locris to its former glory, and change the fate of every young woman destined to follow in her path.
I have a feeling Wilson is going to get our hearts pumping in more ways that one in this new romantasy of 2024 that has elements of The Hunger Games I’m so anxious to read.
I love how the fate of a cursed nation depends on a princess who must outwit a mortal enemy and outlast the trials of a death-defying ritual that has been the ruin of so many maidens in the past. I’m ready to see her triumph!
Servant of Earth
by Sarah Hawley
Kenna Heron is best known in her village for being a little wild—some say half feral—but she’ll need every ounce of that ferocity to survive captivity in the cruel Fae court.
Trapped as a servant in the faeries’ underground kingdom of Mistei, Kenna must help her new mistress undertake six deadly trials, one for each branch of magic: Fire, Earth, Light, Void, Illusion, and Blood. If she succeeds, her mistress will gain immortality and become the heir to Earth House. If she doesn’t, the punishment is death—for both mistress and servant.
With no ally but a sentient dagger of mysterious origins, Kenna must face monsters, magic, and grueling physical tests. But worse dangers wait underground, and soon Kenna gets caught up in a secret rebellion against the inventively sadistic faerie king.
When her feelings for the rebellion’s leader turn passionate, Kenna must decide if she’s willing to risk her life for a better world and a chance at happiness.
Surviving the trials and overthrowing a tyrant king will take cunning, courage, and an iron will… but even that may not be enough.
I never tire of romantasy books where the underestimated human changes everything in the world of the Fae. I cannot wait to see how Kenna fares in the trials and the chemistry that takes shape with the rebellion leader!
A Chill in the Flame
by Piper CJ
Shattered by her sister’s murder, Princess Ophir’s gift for fire magic spirals in her grief, threatening to incinerate the castle. That is, until mysterious siren Dwyn arrives from the sea, pledging both assistance and something more.
They work to quench Ophir’s flames, all the while Dwyn’s longtime rival watches from the shadows: Tyr, who has tracked Dwyn’s abilities across the continent and now finds himself embroiled in a sinister competition with her for Ophir’s heart.
But everything changes when Dwyn’s calculated lessons unlock a second power in Ophir, the most rare and dangerous of all magic…manifestation.
Ophir knows three things for certain. One, she burns passionately for both the beautiful siren and the rugged master of secrets. Two, with their powers combined, the trio can seek revenge against her sister’s killers. And three, no one can be trusted.
Piper CJ is not holding back in this dark romantasy which is the first in a duology. This book is set in Piper’s beloved The Night and Its Moon universe but can be read as a standalone. I’m intrigued most by the love triangle that ensues in this one! I’m not sure who I’ll root for more.
A Dawn of Gods & Fury
by K.A. Tucker
The will of the fates has come to pass. Monsters swarm from the depths, while dragons soar overhead. And the throne of Islor lies vacant… but not for long.
Fleeing the merciless sirens, Tyree and Annika find themselves stranded on a distant shore. Forced together to survive, they find old magics and terrifying new enemies.
For Romeria and Zander, the long-held secrets of the casters’ magic reveal a chance to finally master the power that has held all their lives in the balance for too long. But with power comes betrayal. And sacrifices must be made.
This is the final book in the captivating Fate & Flame series so if you haven’t dived into this romantasy series yet, now is the time! I love that Tucker weaves magic, monsters, dragons and so much more into this book and series. Don’t miss it this fall.
Confounding Oaths
by Alexis Hall
It is the year 1815, and Mr. John Caesar is determined to help his sister, Mary, successfully navigate the marriage mart. A high-stakes endeavor at the best of times, this task is made slightly more difficult by his family’s nontraditional background, the pernicious whims of the ton, and the ever-present complication of living in a world full of scheming fairies and capricious gods.
Despite all that, John knows that his parents wish to see his sister comfortably settled. He also knows that the sooner he sees Mary’s future secured, the sooner he can get his own wish—returning to an aristocratic life of leisure. And as for Mary? Sweet, sensitive Mary just wishes gentlemen would pay as much attention to her as they do to her younger sister.
When Mary’s all-too-literal wish puts her squarely in the sights of a malicious fairy godmother, John sets out to save her. This choice throws him into the path of Captain Orestes James—the handsome up-from-the-ranks hero of Wellington’s armies—and his ragtag band of misfits.
Together, John and the captain will venture into a vicious world of fey bargains and sacrificial magic as they draw ever closer to rescuing Mary—and to each other.
While John is no stranger to casual dalliances with soldiers, until now he’s never expected one to last—or wanted one to. He and the captain come from different worlds, and even if Orestes feels the same, John knows there’s no point in wishing for something more between them.
After all, John has learned firsthand that getting what you wish for can be a dangerous thing.
I am just amazed by the depth of storytelling that Alexis Hall brings to their books. It doesn’t matter whether they’re writing MM romance, billionaire romance, historical romance or now romantasy with a flare of historical – they can do it.
If you’re looking for a new romantasy with a twist, then put this one on your TBR list.
